bad primary after 200 miles

I bought a 17 XP1K4 back in January and have put 197 miles on it since. I tried to do a high speed run in it last weekend and could only get 55mph, so I decided to pull the clutch cover. I discovered pretty bad grooving on the fixed sheave only. what could have caused this? Could it have been something in the way I drove it? Do you think it could still be under the factory 6 month warranty? I'm pretty new to Rzrs and this is the first time I've dug into a clutch.

Thanks

Re: bad primary after 200 miles

I have a 2015 xp1k4. Secondary went out at 1500 miles. Primary got a freshen up but is still in great shape. Sounds really weird that yours would be gone by the 200 mark. I'd check on that warranty for sure. Also make sure factory or otherwise whoever does your work... check the primary & secondary.

Normally just two things cause that water in there or spider nut and spider backed off causing the belt to slip and do that.

I see rust on the pivot pins and weights so water has been in there.

Doubt warranty covers it, maybe you will get lucky

Re: bad primary after 200 miles

How hot would it have to get to cause that? Would getting it wet at normal operating temp cause this? Also, wouldn't you see it on both sheaves if it were due to getting hot and wet? The movable sheave is undamaged.

Re: bad primary after 200 miles

I've seen more than one person post up their primary being like this or worse. My question is , how did you not know there was an issue ? I bought a '16 XP at the end of last year which has the worst clutching on it from the factory so bad that in a few rides I went thru two belts and was able to tell exactly when the clutch was slipping. Usually you could smell it, or feel it and I would lift on the throttle. Are you guys just holding it WFO regardless of how it feels ? Not trying to start anything but just curious.

I just pulled my clutches to do an alignment and clutch kit and there was zero damage to them.

Re: bad primary after 200 miles

That looks really bad for 200 miles. Good luck getting Polaris to replace it under warranty.

I been wondering too how these clutches get this far, I would think you could tell but I have not had it happen to me so I don't know.

Re: bad primary after 200 miles

I haven't ridden it but 4 miles down the paved road since I took it out last, but I didn't feel anything weird. We did ride through a creek the last time I had it out, but it wasn't deep. I was also right next to the pickup and it was at the end of the ride, so no miles put on afterwards. No way that it could have been above normal operating temp at the time I went through the creek. Again, this is my first rzr so I may not know what I'm feeling either. No sounds or hesitation that i noticed. I took these pictures to the dealer yesterday so I should find out today what the verdict is on the warranty coverage.

Thanks for replies.

Shaun

Re: bad primary after 200 miles

Did you ever drive it in the snow,, these clutches will suck in powder and turn it to water,, high rpm snow riding could contribute also

looks like lots of oxidation on the aluminum in the pics also

Re: bad primary after 200 miles

We ride in the mountains in norther Idaho and we've had a snow-heavy winter this year. Every trip out this year has been in the snow at some capacity, and this machine is going to see this regularly. Whats best way to prevent this in the future? Snorkel? Aftermarket clutch? I ride with a lot of other Polaris machines and have not seen anything like this before.
