id love to know also, you remove the stator cover, fly wheel and you can see the bottom gear on the crank, there is a case casting at the bottom of the gear that does not allow the chain to come off the gear unless the crank is picked up. iv tried, and have had to go by the manual on this one. maybe im missing something so hopefully someone else can chime in.
you can see here where timing chain area is. How would you reseal case correctly if you just loosen up enough to get chain past? Also you have to clean case halves once you break seal loose, once engine is out of car it is actually very easy job.
