Trailratedcj7's TRE Build

I have been posting all over the place in the forums and thought I should consolidate all the build details I have into one place.

Just to start off I reside in Wisconsin and ride some trails here but almost all of my focus on my TRE's capabilities have been focused on MOAB. I make the voyage once a year and plan to even go more often.

For those of you considering a TRE read carefully all the great details on the forum. The TRE offers much more than meets the eye. The powertrain, handling, 4wd operation, armor, among other things that are very different than a standard XP1k. These differences make the TRE a platform that excels with some minor adjustments in rock crawling.

I traded my 900XP for the TRE when the TRE debuted. At that time not much info existed on what was truly different about the TRE and they just called it a Gold Limited at the time when I ordered it.

Re: Trailratedcj7's TRE Build

To start I did several minor mods to the machine.

1. Poly Roof
2. 30 inch totron LED curved light bar https://www.totron.com/product/30-in...d-light-bar-2/
3. No name 12 inch LED light bar in the nose
4. Factor55 Prolink on my winchhttps://factor55.com/product/prolink-xtv/
5. Desert Moulding Concepts air filter change and support bracket mod.RZR XP1000/XPT/Turbo S Air Filter
6. Sandcraft Magnetic Drain Plugs https://www.sandcraftmotorsports.com...rain-plug-kit/

Our first run in MOAB of 2017 with the machine produced some impressive results in the capability of the TRE vs my old 900XP. Not power but rather suspension, gearing, and TRACTION.
We generally run 4 or 5 PSI of air pressure in MOAB trails and 10 to 12 psi on Wisconsin trails.

Poison Spider was the first place I ever ran the machine.

Re: Trailratedcj7's TRE Build

After our first trip we came up with a list of things we DID NOT LIKE.

1. Front suspension thud going to full droop. Its the piston in the front shocks unloading causing a large thud. I ended up installing limiting straps that really only impacted my travel by maybe a 1/2 inch. No more thumps at all.

2. Rear suspension didnt like to flex much. I ordered a Zbroz Adjustable sway bar which works really well to tighten up the sway or open it up for extra articulation. I ended up with LSR billet links which are nice but I didnt like having to adjust it and to be honest I only care about articulation. I just recently went with Walker links and replaced the ZBROZ sway bar. Its for sale if you are interested.

3. Rear upper and lower radius rods squeak. We use a grease needle to slip up under the boot and pump grease in. Never heard a squeak since.

4. Shock ends squeak. pull them apart add a little grease under the O ring and problem is solved.

5. Rear radius rod plate bent. We replaced with the ZRP unit as it has a real solid hook on it and not the factory little one that bends. https://www.zollingerracingproducts....dius-rod-plate

6. Needed Rock Lights. Ended up installing Infinite Offroad Lights. They work really well.https://www.infiniteoffroad.com/rock-lights#!

7. Did not like the factory spring rates. We felt like we were able to use all the travel so we went with Shock Therapy spring setup. WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE! ONE OF THE BEST MODS EVER!https://shocktherapyst.com/dual-rate...-s-900-2-seat/

Re: Trailratedcj7's TRE Build

With the above changes the machine ran GREAT and performed GREAT but I still felt we needed to tweak a few more things.

Navigation was still a challenge, secure storage, and I saw some walker links in action and was amazed at how well they worked so just put some on.

After seeing a factory cage crush on a machine that had rolled I was sold that I was putting a cage on.

1. So I went with the Tusk lockable storage trunk. I saw several at MOAB and now I know why. BEST MOD EVER. Lockable, secure, huge storage, great fit and fit.
Ours has the cargo rails added to it and I bedlined the top surface as I mount a Yeti Roadie 20 to the top of it. https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p...tv-cargo-box-p

2. I also decided to fab up a ram ball mount to hold a RAM universal tablet 9 inch holder. I used a Cell Based Ipad mini as its the only version that has the GPS receiver and put it in a defender case. We can now run 4X4Trails app on the ipad as well as use the Ipad to stream music to our speaker and also use it flying our drone while we are on the move.

3. Added a Blow Hole as a way to keep the belt cool. I havent had a belt temp issue but I also dont want one either.https://www.mtntkperformance.com/blo...1000-blow-hole

4. Secondary Roller kit from Hunterworks. It replaces the secondary clutches square pucks to round rollers to prevent the square pucks from notching the secondary housing. While the mod is more for longevity I noticed an improved feel on my backshift. Seemed like it transitioned much smoother.https://www.hunterworks.com/inc/sdetail/56301/74234

Re: Trailratedcj7's TRE Build

On to my latest project.... The Cage

After searching and searching I decided I wanted a flat top non bumper integrated cage. I also wanted a cage built by a race team.

I chose UTV WolfPack. Cage is amazing. Solid welds, 1.75 DOM Tube with .095 wall thickness. I wanted to balance strength and weight as I didnt want to upset my COG.

I ordered the cage raw and finished it in a bed liner coating for durability.

I am having my roof wrapped at a local place with a custom design and I also ordered a 40 inch curved Totron LED light bar to cover up the rather large forehead of the roof line. Ill end up building my own mounts when it arrives with tube clamps.

Re: Trailratedcj7's TRE Build

Cutting, Siping, and Grooving
I had posted a while back asking others what patterns or practices were being used. I found out quickly that I am in the minority doing this.

Grooving reduces your tires life?
TRUE dont consider doing this unless you are willing to accept the fact that your tires will wear fast or round faster or possibly chunk depending on how or what you cut.

Does Grooving have the capability to add traction? Yes to a used tire adding sharp fresh biting edges can improve the tire bite depending on the terrain. I see a significantly less amount of wheel slip compared to my friends identical TRE on the same trails with the same air pressure.

How do you cut or sipe them? A hot knife with various different shapes. They can be purchased on ebay cheap and it only takes me about an hour tops to freshen my tires up.

To me after a couple of years the sticky compound tires tend to harden up and lose traction so I groove them hard and use as much as I can but for me I change tires about every 3 years so that I can get good fresh stickies for crawling.

Running high speed racing or wide open I am not sure you could see that big of a difference.

Re: Trailratedcj7's TRE Build

Thanks for the video's and mod write up Trailrated!

The TRE eats Moab. And just about anything else in its way. It is an awesome machine.

Your suspension mods are very similar to mine. ST stage IV with limit straps. That bang when the front shocks hit their limit drove me crazy.

My factory sway bar broke the bracket on the right (passenger) side. I got a ST sway bar and went with Thunder Hawk sway bar mount brace.

The rear ST sway bar was waaaaaaay to stiff for the TRE. Added Walker Evans links and that really makes the TRE perform like it is supposed to.

Tell me more details on your iPad mount and bracket/holder. That is what I am looking to adding next

Gents- Great write up...
I have tossed the 2.0 WE front shocks on my 2019 TRE and went to the 2.5 and had ED " The suspension Guy" dial in the correct valving in addition to the new Swift springs.. ,, Did this front and rear with new Tenders and Mains and valving.. for the cost.. WOW what an understatement, the ride is smoooooth but am adding the limit straps to rid of the annoying drop from the front also..

Did put on from new the WE Links and yes improvement is top notch.
Junk the stock seats and put in some aftermarket- ( went with XC PRP XTA)
No Ride command ..did like you and went with a I Pad Mini 4 with a Ram mount to the dash area but above the T bar for a extended view,,

Love the new cage you have .. next on the list .

I'm installing ST stage 4 on our TRE as well. Read several post about shock body ware from the divider rubbing the shock. Have you experienced shock ware?

Whats the difference between the stock seats and the PRPs? What makes the PRPs so much better?

I havent seen any real wear. Some rubbing but I can see if you ride in really muddy conditions that mud could get between the shock body and the divider and rubbing the body but we rarely run in mud. I avoid it if at all possible personally.

I dont have any experience with seats other than the stocker ones. I was looking at PRP's but until I have a chance to sit in some I wont order. I just haven't ever had an opportunity yet to sit in some.

The WE links were installed on my buddies 2019 TRE and had a chance to try them a few weeks ago in MOAB. I was impressed enough I ordered them online when we stopped for lunch. I think they are in high demand as they just showed up this week.

Rocky you are right the TRE dominates at MOAB. Its so impressive what these will climb with no throttle assault like the other machines. If you watch the behind the rocks video you will see my buddy going up Hummer hill in 2wd.

As you requested here are some photos and details on my holder setup.

Its RAM 1.5 sized ball harware to get a better grip and stiffen the mounts up. I played around using some spare 1 inch ball mount hardware and it wasnt real stable.

Essentially all you need is 2 1.5 in round ball bases. Drill and tap one, drill a hole through the T handle and run a bolt up into the ball and you have a good base. As you know the t handle has a little play in it so it can move a little.
I used the shortest 1.5 inch arm I could find which is about 2 inches mounted to another round base bolted to the universal RAM tablet holder.

Here are some pictures and I am sorry for the orientation. They are all correct on my computer but when I upload them they all rotate.

Re: Trailratedcj7's TRE Build

Carrier Bearing Upgrade
If you own a RZR and havent been plagued with vibration consider yourself lucky. Lots of good threads on how to fix this or reduce this vibration and noise.

the TRE machines this can be a brutal vibration as they dont utilize the on demand feature with a small amount of wheel slip prior to diff activation. When you flip the switch shes ready to rock and so is the vibration.

Truthfully I rarely use 4wd. In fact I have never used 4wd in Wisconsin. You just dont need it unless you are mudding on these trails.
Obviously we utilize 4wd when we are at MOAB but I only turn the 4wd on at the beginning of obstacles and turn it off immediately.

So what am I getting at? Because I use it part time I didnt need the full powertrain package from Sandcraft. I just upgraded the carrier bearing. Does it still vibrate? YES it does but not nearly as bad.

Mine was easy to install. I didnt need to loosen the front diff up at all. the worst part is pulling the belly pans.

https://www.sandcraftmotorsports.com...ing-gen3-2017/

Wheel Bearings? Here is another Polaris favorite point of frustration. If you are running stock bearings that have not been greased then you WILL experience short life especially in wet conditions.
I ran into issues with replacement wheel bearings from AllBalls as they are 10 thousands smaller in od so they fit the hubs loose. No dice for me.
I bought a grease tool from Tiger Tools https://www.tigertool.com/tools/

I ended up putting close to 20 pumps of grease in each brand new Polaris wheel bearings. After this I have never had a failure.
Invest in the tool!

Re: Trailratedcj7's TRE Build

I did the same on my wheel bearings. Tiger tool and green grease.

It was about the same, 20 pumps.

Did that when I found one of my front prop shaft u-joints had one that was rusted and very close to failure (1000 miles on new machine!)

I tried the sand craft carrier bearing when I had the prop shaft out for repairs. Did not like it. Vibration and noise actually seemed worse.

After all the time & money I spent finding u-joints for the front shaft (un-available separately from Polaris) and the sand craft gen3 carrier bearing, it seemed like the vibration and noise actually increased. I was ticked to say the least.

Pried open the wallet and bit the bullet. Bought an RCV 2 piece CV shaft, LINKY

Noise is almost completely gone. Very slight in 4WD-L Vibration is completely gone. My TRE is as smooth as a Lexus. $1200 but I am very happy with the results.

Re: Trailratedcj7's TRE Build

Great reading! i have done most of the same as you guys, Sandcraft carrier bearing, hunter clutch rollers, W.E. links on rear, tiger tool for wheel bearings. I did the cagewerks cage and i really like my Pro Armor doors. My buddies where jealous when my TRE at them up at MOAB also! We have made 2 trips to Farmington N.M. and it is a another awesome rock crawling place as well! Next pruchase in stage 4 setup. I am looking at running the Mexican 1000 next April. Look it up, it is different than the Baja 1000, alot more fun.
