Open Trail 1/2" UHMW full belly skid plate-review
After a hard beating in TN on the bottom of the RZR I decided to go with a UHMW set up. The Open Trail one was $433 delivered on eBay. Obviously one of the least expensive ones.
The coverage it really good. Side to side, under the front and rear. Good thick heavy duty stuff. However, in my opinion, it falls short in a few areas.
1. The instructions. Its just a piece of paper showing where bolts go. No real instructions of what to put on first and how to line things up. But it wasn't that hard. Also, you have to drill 10 holes to put in some of the mounting hardware. The 8 on the sides are marked on the instructions, the two under the front are not noted, you just have to figure it out.
2. The self taping bolts they provide are long enough for the holes that are already there, but too short for the ones you have to drill on the sides. So plan on buying a few that are 1.25" long.
3. In the front after you install the plate, there is about a 1" gap between the plate and the frame rail. Really makes no sense to have that there. I tried jacking it up figuring I could put a U bolt in there or fab up a bracket, but the material is too strong to really flex to close the gap.
I did call the vendor and they were very nice on the phone and even called me back. Their position was that this was an inexpensive way to get a 1/2" UHMW plate and that making some mods was necessary. So I guess you get what you pay for. They also gave me the number for Open Trail so I could call them and get some ideas on how to modify it to make it right. I will probably do that today.
I would be interested in hearing some other folks input on their UHMW set up and how it worked.
