900 XP Cam Installation Question

In the service manual for the cam installation part, I don't believe it requires me to have the pistons in any particular location prior to cam installation and subsequent valve clearance check. During the valve clearance check the cams are rotated without the timing chain connected. I'm concerned that if the engine is an interference engine I could push the valves into the pistons when rotating the cams. Is my concern valid? Is the engine an interference engine?

Re: 900 XP Cam Installation Question

Pull the plugs out and roll the pistons to a position where neither one is at TDC. Now you can roll the cams without any interference.

Re: 900 XP Cam Installation Question

The timing mark on the flywheel only tells you when piston#1 is at TDC so I'm not sure I could tell where #2 is at. Maybe look thru the spark plug hole? Strange that the manual would be silent if this were an issue.

Re: 900 XP Cam Installation Question

#2 will be opposite of Piston #1. My 2012 with 11.5:1 pistons does not hit the valves. Just put the head back on and timed it last night.

Re: 900 XP Cam Installation Question

It's not an issue. If I install the cams with lobes in the position described in the manual I can the rotate the cams to proper position for measuring valve clearance without having to move the valves. Answered my own question. :-)
