2014 800 XC rough idle.

Hi all, 2nd post.

Just got a 14 800 XC with 40 hours and 300 miles. Stock as far as I know. I've searched a bit for rough idle and did find some stuff but not the same I think.

This thing idles like it has a big cam in it, well like crap really. It never dies, seems to run good other than that. I'm gonna start with the basics, first fresh gas, check the plugs, maybe run some fuel injector cleaner through it.

Any other ideas? Any common stuff on these 800s that causes rough idle?

TIA

I’m definitely not an expert. But I’d say your on the right track. Start with the basic tune up. Air filter, oil change, fresh gas, new plugs, an go from there. Keep us posted

The 800 does have a kind of clumsy idle that is normal. It doesn’t purr like most engines, if that makes sense. Have you compared it to another one?

No kidding? No I have not.

Went to the local dealer yesterday and got all the fluids for service and new plugs.

Talked to a mechanic there and he said sounds like a TPS issue. He said it was very common for it needing and adjustment after a TB cleaning with the bad idle.

Well.... Did all the fluids, belt and plugs yesterday. Pulled the TB, cleaned, new plugs, pulled injectors and cleaned them, tried adjusting TPS like he said, just can't seem to get it right. Same problem.

Looked online found a TPS on Ebay, it's 12 bucks so I ordered it and a service manual. Should have it real soon so will see what happens. Going to update this thread in hopes of helping someone in the future. Still need to try and find a pigtail for voltage adjustment or I'll have to probe the wires. I don't like to do that to wires that are exposed to moisture. Will figure something out.

Once the bed is off it's a piece of cake to work on, so that's a good thing.

@BWXT maybe I'm chasing my tail on the idle but it sure seems bad. I have no way of comparing the idle to another 800. Seems that dealer mechanic would have mentioned that?? If someone posted a video with good sound that would be awesome.

Here's a vid of my idle, please feel free to chime in. It will get a little worse than in the vid if it idles longer.

If you’re talking about that pulsating rhythm to the idle, my buddy’s machine does the exact same thing. Almost sounds like a Harley, but quieter. Sounds pretty normal to me, but I’ll let others chime in.

Yes, I've been checking out videos of 800s and I'm beginning to think it is normal. Maybe it has a high duration cam, it sounds like that could be what it is.

Thanks For the reply.

Re: 2014 800 XC rough idle.

Good find, with something with that low of miles and hours. There can't be too much wrong with it. The 800's seem to all have that lopey mean, it's gotta cam idle to them. I've got a '14 800, that I bought with low hours on it . Besides maintenance stuff; packing wheel bearings, rear diff. nut checked and aligning the front end. The only thing I really needed to do was to adjust the slack out of the throttle cable.

Re: 2014 800 XC rough idle.

Thought I would update this tread for future lookers. After the replies and watching vids of 800s I'm convinced the rough idle is normal.

I got a chance to take it out yesterday and it hauls ass and seems to be able to climb a tree!

I also think the half windshield is nothing but a dirt sucker to help blow dirt into the cab. Took it off and it seems all good now.

Thanks all for the replies.
