first timer to Rally on the Rocks

Hey, i know its early but I got the green light for Rally on the Rocks for 2019. I have a decent amount of time to get myself prepared. I have a few of what i think are the essentials. I have a 2018 XPT-4 and bought high clearance A-Arms, radius rods, Full UHMW skids, winch, im debating high clearance trailing arms. But i have a few more questions.
Im getting rid of the factory bighorns and going with 32X10X15 Pro armor crawlers. Are bead locks a must? Would 34s be to big?
Todd and hunterworks had a post up on facebook saying to run stock clutching with that size tire for crawling. anyone have experience with that?
I used to have a highlifter but have the XPT-4 and i hate my low gear in this turbo, am i going to have belt issues?
Do the venders set up give discounts? or am i better off to just buy what i need before i get down
Sorry for all the questions, Im really excited and this is a bucket list thing for me. Its about 1300miles each way for me coming from Canada so i have to have all my s%*t together.

thanks all

Re: first timer to Rally on the Rocks

I've been to ROTR a few times and you'll enjoy it. Being experienced we choose not to ride with the groups because they move too slow for our taste. We prefer to do our own thing and ride a bit more technical stuff than the group rides do. Since you have not been before riding a guided tour with the group is probably the best idea.

Sounds like you have a good start of stuff. High clearance trailing arms are not really necessary nor beadlocks, however they do help. I would suggest Shock Therapy springs, they will provide added GC and a better ride.

34s are too big and will not clear if you do not have forward A-Arms. 32" Pro Armor crawlers will do very well in Moab. RC Lobos are another great tire for slick rock trails.

I would suggest a clutch hit for the 32s, not required but will help. Personally I prefer SLP products. Ether way run low gear and you'll be fine.

The vendors will have some deals but not as much as you might think. You are much better off getting anything you need ahead of time. There will be several vendors setup to work on machines doing upgrades and repairs. They book up quickly and stay busy the entire time.

It's an epic adventure for sure, be safe and enjoy.

Re: first timer to Rally on the Rocks

One thing about the vendor's is they normally charge the same price for everything but will usually install it for free. Shock Therapy does not come to ROTR so get those first (I know a bit late to the party!).

I have the Pro Armor XG's on my 17 xpt4 and they do great. I have Tensor Regulators on my 2 seaters with bead locks running around 4-5 lbs of air and I like them as well. The XG's do wear fast on pavement though. About the only place that hits on my 4 seater is where the trailing arms mount to the chassis but I do have ST stage 4 springs and valving so it does sit a bit higher than stock.

PM me when you get here and we can meet up and go for a ride. I have a few other friends who will be here as well and you are welcome to join us!

Re: first timer to Rally on the Rocks

Derek I bought a 2017 XP 4 1000. My first trip to Moab I bottomed out all the time. I did the full UHMW skids, 2 inch lift, high clearance A arms and trailing arms, and Pro Armor Crawlers in 32x10x14. What a difference!! I hardly hit bottom, those Crawlers flattened out the rocks and bumps and went over everything. We did Poison Spider, Hellís Revenge, Fins and Things, Steel Bender, Metal Masher, and even went up the Pickle without a winch. I didnít do a clutch kit, but I pry will. I get a lot of jerking on takeoff with the 32 s. The Crawlers seem to wear a lot on the edges of the lugs from the rocks and pavement, but I love the way they feel and perform. Iím running 8 psi with beadlocks. I would recommend the beadlocks so you could air down to 5 psi if you need to. Good luck with your choices. You ll have a blast in Moab.

Re: first timer to Rally on the Rocks

Thanks for all the info! I went with the STI X-Comp tires. not to many reviews on them yet but i like how they look (32X10X14) with beadlock rims. Got my high clearance, forward A-Arms and rear radius bars upgraded, and also larger tie-rod ends and a rugged radio set-up (NOT HAPPY with customer service) all ready to ride!!

Re: first timer to Rally on the Rocks

The Discount tire Rally on the Rocks is a blast you won't soon forget. It will put a huge smile on your face.

Stop by the Discount tire booth for some surprises.

Beadlock wheels are not necessary.

If you go with the new Method 409 Wheel they have Patented Bead Gripģ technology that engages the tire bead for increased grip at low air pressures.

Let us know if we can help.
