Re: Winch Rope or Cable?

I like rope. You can handle it without gloves and dont have to worry about getting your hands cut. When it breaks it just falls to the ground and you can tie a square knot in it and be back in action in a few minutes.

The only down side I see is it is more susceptible to frays from rocks, roots, etc.

Re: Winch Rope or Cable?

rope:
Pros: less dangerous if it happens to break.
can tie a knot if it does break and keep winching
lighter
smaller so you can hold more length on the spool
doesn't cut your hand

Cons: Will dry rot after a few years if you mud a lot and become weaker.

just what I can think of off the top of my head.

Re: Winch Rope or Cable?

What I dont like about the cable is how jacked up it gets on the spool after you use it a few times.

Newbie question but I assume you can just unwind the cable and replace it with rope?

Yes, you can replace a cable with rope. Make sure your spool is free of burs/knicks, and also replace your roller fairlead with a hawse.

Re: Winch Rope or Cable?

Rope..

The first time you grab a steel winch cable without gloves that's been spooled for a year or two you'll wish you had bought rope. Rust, grease, wire splinters and cuts...F'that. Winch a buddy out of a mud hole and have to go get a damn tetanas shot. LOL

Never even thought about the emergency re-splicability (is that a word?)...but that's awesome!

Re: Winch Rope or Cable?

That is a great avatar!

I've not used my winch yet but wanted to replace the cable with a synthetic rope but wasn't sure how well the rope held up/worked.

Any particular brand to consider?

Re: Winch Rope or Cable?

Rope all the way, and as a bonus it floats! Much easier to handle and safer.
