How does the XP compare to the S.....

For those of you that do mostly trails.....not dunes and jumping, etc., how does the S compare to the XP as far as ride, steering, handling? I know the width of the XP could make it tough to maneuver in some places. I also know the power is leaps and bounds ahead of the S.....but I am wondering about the ride quality, steering and handling overall.

Anyone care to share their unbiased opinion??

Re: How does the XP compare to the S.....

Trails is all that I ride. The ride quality isn't even comparable. The extra power needed on steep hills/long hills is very nice to have. The steering is a little tougher, but not bad at all in my book (my tiny little girlfriend has no trouble driving it). The overall handling is also great. IMO it is a very predictable machine once you get the hang of driving it. I know that I am very happy with my purchase of my XP over a S model. I would be more than happy to try and answer any other questions you may have about the xp.

This is the kind of idiotic posts I was hoping NOT to get.

tackett, I have heard from a few people that the steering effort was increased a bit on the XP....and I had read somewhere that people were saying the ride wasnt all that great. I also talked with a guy who said he owned a new XP for one ride and sold it and went back to the commander X!! That one really susprised me....but I guess different strokes for different folks.

I am thinking about selling my S and upgrading, I just wanted to make sure this thing wasnt set up for only serious duning and jumping....still want long ride comfort ya know??

Absolutely the steering does require more effort than say a "S" model. But again, in my opinion, it's not really that bad.

For me, the stock ride was pretty darn good on the trail, however, after playing with the shocks a little more, the ride was even better.

My friend has a Can-Am Commander X. It is very nice in the interior, and is pretty quick. But, the suspension on it doesn't cut it for me... It is kind of like driving a big fast school bus. However, it works for him as my XP works for me.

Like Tim said, the S will do everything that the XP will do. It's just that the XP does it faster I guess you can say.

Re: How does the XP compare to the S.....

Well as far as jumping and rough trails the xp is smooth no bottoming out ever. The s seems like it bottoms out all the time. Maybe you should take a ride in one and see for yourself, but just to warn you your not gunna like your s anymore.

Re: How does the XP compare to the S.....

I don't have a lot of time on my 2012 800S le but I looked at and drove the new XP9 (and the wildcat) before buying the S. I only ride trails, mostly out camping with my GF. Price wasn't the deciding factor, comfort and ease of use was. The first thing on the XP that I noticed after getting off the S was how much more steering effort there was going slow, i know the GF would want power steering for sure. But still not a deal breaker, the only other thing that swayed my decision was the XP seemed to ride a bit stiffer compared to the S le (w/ fox shocks) again at slower speeds. At higher speeds I think the XP comes into its own however (as does the wildcat) so really I looked honestly at my intended use and am very happly with the 800S le, but definatly get the package with better shocks (or plan to upgrade) if you go that route... Good luck with your decision.

Re: How does the XP compare to the S.....

They are both way-good.

with me if I wanted speed I would go with xp

How-ever I just like to cruise and take in the ride.

So it comes down do you want speed? Get the XP

or do you want to Cruise? Get the standard rzr or rzr-s

Re: How does the XP compare to the S.....

Well, I already have a 2010 RZR S LE......I just want more power. but I keep going back and forth about the width, price, and whether its really worth it for just normal trail riding and such. I added barker's dual exhaust....and was considering a clutch kit and dynatek for a bit more power, but I kinda feel like I am just throwing money away that could be put toward an XP. I am truly on the fence. I really love my S on the trails.....but when I hit the creeks on occasion and throw the 28" terms on......it feels like someone pulled off a plug wire!

Re: How does the XP compare to the S.....

I was all hell bent on a 60 inch wide XP because I trail ride in UP and northern Wisconsin.I pulled the trigger on a xp 80 mph Vodoo Blue one LOL.I dont look back one bit.I dont want anything to do with my 09 S that now just sits as back up.I go in all the tight places backsides of bluffs, etc that I did with my S dont really notice a width change.

Re: How does the XP compare to the S.....

Ground clearance is another big plus for the XP, so far the only downfall is the slow speed steering. Don't have to worry about that much though, I like to go fast. The shocks are stiffer, but they don't bottom out on the trail like the 800, it's a trade off and it feels better at high speed.

Re: How does the XP compare to the S.....

If price is not an issue and trails are mostly what you ride, you could throw a turbo on your S with some new progressives and be about as pleased with the ride as possible. I love how my turbo S rips on the trails. Couldn't fit an XP where we ride anyway, so it's not even an option. My S will break the ass-end loose at 35-40mph when desired It's fun.
