ATV Sportsman 850 vs F250

The specs show the Polaris will tow 1,500lbs but what are the limits? So today we hitched up a 6,000lb diesel F250 with a loaded bed to the sportsman. About 4 x over spec.

On asphalt the ATV pulled that truck with ZERO issues and it was accelerating. Medium throttle. No wheel spin. No front wheel lift. Truck was in neutral gear.

On turf the ATV would pull on flat dry surface but just couldn't get enough traction to pull the truck up a slight incline. 4 wheel drive kicked in but just dug ruts.

Overall very impressive power/torque setup of Polaris. I'd bet 500cc power would have towed that truck with the low gear selected, not sure on the trans? The weight of the ATV and tire grip was limiting the traction.

Luckily this was not a 6,000 Lb brake test.

Just wanted to share.

I owned a 1998 sportsman and used it to pull my 1979 28' Flote Boat pontoon. Was very impressed with it. Even drug it up a 200 ft hill with about a 7% incline.

use a 400 kodiak to push trucks around at work all the time. some weighing more than 10k lbs. your truck should be right around 7200lbs.

Re: ATV Sportsman 850 vs F250

I pulled a Wrangler that was almost flipped off the side of a mountain with my XP850 in low. Tied onto the roll bar and pulled it back onto the trail with help from the Jeep. The fool had his family in it and drove it off the side of the road to avoid a rock, and the shoulder gave out. He was shaking scared so bad he could hardly turn the key and get it into gear. Wife almost kissed me. Guy never thanked me and originally told me he was "all set". I stayed anyway. What a f'in fool he was. Felt bad for the kids and the wife. She was in tears. Sportsman saved his ass.

Re: ATV Sportsman 850 vs F250

I had a '12 850xp that I traded in when I got my rzr. I really really liked the power that monster had but it was almost too big for anything practical. Good mudding machine but for farm work/hunting it was way too overkill for me. Upgraded to the rzr and never looked back
