Lots of 50 inch trails in Utah??

I've been getting the impression that Utah has a lot of 50 in. trails... is this true?

I've got a Standard RZR, but with aftermarket wheels and tires, it's at 53 in. wide right now.
Should I be looking for stock 50 in. wheels and tires to ride Utah?

I've ridden in Utah since 99 with the last three years on a 50 inch RZR. There are over 3000 miles of 50 inch trails but that means 50 not 53. When we got new tires a couple of years back I didn't realize the new wheels had a 2 inch offset making us 54 inches so more than half the trails are strictly 50 and therefore not usable. We went back to stock. The way this is done is at the trail entrance two 4 inch steel posts are set about 51 3/4 to 52 because not all entrances can be entered straight on. National Geographic just came out with a great set of maps for the Paiute and Fishlake trail systems and the 50 inch are well marked as are the over 50. They are well worth the money because they are also very durable and the easiest trail maps to read I've seen. When they say 50 inch in Utah they're serious but there are quite a few over 50 trails also.

I just got that new (2011) Nat'l. Geographic map, and it does NOT show anywhere which trails are 50 in., and which are wider. Doesn't show position of any gates on trails, either.

The Legend is not very informative, for instance, does not explain the difference between solid double line trails and dashed double line trails.
Nor does it explain what a single bold dashed line trail is...

Waste of money, IMO.

i've been riding there for the past 13 yrs with stock Ploaris 500's,and in 08 and 10 my wifes uncle brought his 08 RZR out and we've been thru 15 cattle guard crossings[the hummdee type] and maybe 8 gates...the RZR only had a rub on 2 cattle crossings, other then that no trouble..this will be the 1st time for me with the RZR this year..here is some other forum that shows were some of the gates are at..
ATVUtah Forum - Bucket list
and Gerry is right get the map,the lastest one is here with all the 2011 updates
ATVUtah Shopping
the book is a little dated but still has a whole lot of info if you never been there before..we will be there Sept 18th thru the 23rd.. i'm getting ready to bend my doors in to get thru some gates..
note: you can order the map alone and the new info provides trails for 60" machines..

you'll be riding forest service roads, which we do also to get to the trails, but you wont be able to get to the good stuff..i've only seen the trail ranger[cops] 3 times in 13 yrs,and each time it was when we were with the ATV jamboree group..the 10 yrs riding rouge with just a couple other riders i've never seen a ranger[cop],but the forest service guys gave a mean speach at the jamboree meeting stating that if you are caught then.........

Thanks for the info. Sounds like if we go out there, we should bring the ATVs, and not the SXS. I know there are a lot of Rhino guys who go out there, and they are 56" wonder what they do?

I like the idea of the ATVs better anyways, then we have 2 vehicles and not just one (It would just be the wife and I going by ourselves...Or is that not recommended to go with just 2 people?)

I would imagine the purpose of the 50" is because that's all the wider the trails are in some spots...So they wouldn't be worth venturing down anyways with a RZR S...So how could one get "caught" on those trails if they are not wide enough to get there in the first place? Or am I missing something?

Thanks for the info!

I have come upon several gates that say 50 inch only trails...and my 60 inch s rubs both tires but squeezes through all but one of them so far. From what i hear though its $300 if you get caught.

If you do not get the new map, you may be riding down a trail for several miles and come to a 50 inch gate and have to turn around because there is not escape route for the wider machines. We rode 5 miles down a trail and came to a cattle gate that went over a barbed wire fence. There was no way around it short of pushing the fence down.
However, there are many trails you can ride with an S but you need to be street legal to ride some of the county roads to get from one trial to another (what a forest ranger told us). We ran into this situation on our way to Circleville from Marysvale.
We are going out there Aug, 29 thru Sept. 8th. We now have 50 inch RZR so we can ride the good stuff.

WOW! Glad I kept the stock narrow offset rims! Definitely want to ride the 50 in. trails!
Now I just need to replace the cheezy factory Maxxis 2 ply front tires with something a little better...

Over the years we just stayed in Richfield, and not saying you can't ride to all the trails from there, but there are more trials from Richfield that you can ride a S or Xp on..trust me,there is way over 1000miles of trails you can ride on that a car can't go on..Most of the 50" trails are a whole lot wider then50",but they will bust you if you get caught..couple years ago they had pictures the FS took of 4 guys tearing down the gates to get their Rhinos and wide ATVs thru..there are FS roads that are real challenging in their way..some FS roads have a bunch of whoops that are a blast to grab some air..last 7 years we have just been loading up everyday and driving over to different trail heads, seems like we get more TRAIL riding that way. A lot of people go and ride 15to25 to 50 miles a day,and some ride 100 to150 or more per day..1st year there 6of us left at 7:00am and got back at 9:00pm and rode135miles.. use to just crack up listening to the noobs saying(wow,I'm worn out from riding 25to 30 miles) If. You're not use to reading a map,or adventurous, then I would suggest and it's worth joining the ATV jamboree at least once or twice if you think you will be returning to the area, and ride as much in different areas as possible..After the first year,we took only the advanced trail each year after..most of the advance trails are rated that way do to the miles ridden.. No need to bring oversized mud tires or lifted RZR's,however we did ride in a blizzard once, and thru a lot of hail..

i've not been on the Paiute trail this year but on other trails the gates have been "skinnied up" from what they have been. I can get through the cattle guard type fine but have trouble with the gates. Some do not have a straight access and some have slope to the ground, which causes the rollbar to tip into the gate (tearing the canvas top grrr).

I live in Fillmore, one of the main access points to the trail system. I have noticed several new 50 inch gates just this year. I have a 50 inch RZR that has several scratches on the sides from the gates. As stated earlier, if you can't get a straight shot at the gate, or if the gate is not exactly level, you will scratch the sides of your ride. Also as stated earlier, the best trails are 50 inch; I would not want to be limited only to the wider trails.

Have fun!!

We are arriving Aug. 29th for two weeks. We were there last year with a RZRS. I did not like the fact I could not ride the 50 inch trails. I now have a 50 incher with the wrong tires and it is 51 1/2. I am thinking I may need to get different tires before I come out there.

I am the original author of the thread highlighted above titled "Bucket List". We only rode for two days, about 135 miles. Something I've always wanted to do, and thoroughly enjoyed.

I tried twice to get thru gates marked "Less than 50' ". When I mentioned that, I was led to believe I didn't know what I was talking about, my ride must not be "stock", or didn't know what I was doing. In another thread on that site, "Trail Destruction", some of the hirarchy eluded to the fact that SxS's where not welcome.

Seeing as how I've been there once, done that, I'll take my money elsewhere. Strictly my opinion of course.

I just change Tires out it this week...was at 52 1/2" ,back down to 50"..had 26x912's on front, went to 26/8/12's,went from buzz saws back to atr's..they are so serious about the 50" rule more then anything else, and most there don't have good things to say about side by sides, not so much the RZR,but more about the others, that are at ??? Other then 50",which includes ATV's..talked to a friend out there the other day,he and his brother each have 2 RZR's and was asking about how much I could get by with, and he said keep it at 50"..

Well I don't know what you're talking about I'm looking at my map right now and the little white boxes scattered around the map say quite clearly ''VEHICLES 50 INCH OR LESS ONLY'' for those trails with that limitation! On my map just east of Richfield as an example trails 40,41and 66 are all so designated. On my map legend all double dashed lines are ATV trails with a colored circle with wavy line for easier trails and a square box with a more jagged line for more difficult riding shown along the trail itself. Also listed is the length of the trail between red markers. I don't know what legend you looked at but mine is very clear and informative. My map is marked as ''Revised 2011''. One of the best ATV trail maps I've ever scene IMO!

I re-checked my map again, specifically east of Richfield. The little white boxes only say
"Caution, steep/difficult". No 50 in. designations, anywhere.
So, I go and check closely for which edition this map is, and it's 2006!
Purchased directly from the National Geographic website, purportedly as NEW.
What a ripoff :(

Went and re-ordered the map from Utah ATV website - THIS one is supposed to be the 2011 edition...

Is there alot of 50" gates in the Moab area? I'm heading there first week of Oct. with a bunch of ATV folks and I'm the only one with a RZR. But I've been thinking I should add a lift then the wheel spacers to compensate the lift. I've mtn biked there a bunch but didn't pay attention to any of the gates.

I was in the local BLM, St George, yesterday and they acknowledged that NG maps were out of date. The St George office sent 20 maps back and had them replaced. Call your BLM office.

My wife got our updated map form ATV Utah, I think. Anyway you want the 2011 edition.
