RZR shuts down when I disconnect the battery

I disconnect the battery while my RZR 570 is running and the machine shuts off, would this be a sign that my alternator is not working?? Thx

To test charging, use volt meter on battery post. Start and watch volt meter. Rev up, you should get 14.0 to 14.5 volts.

Re: RZR shuts down when I disconnect the battery

Sorry but that is incorrect. First they use a stator and not an alternator. Secondly, when the engine is spinning it turns the stator which in-turn produces a 3-phase AC signal. The Stater output goes to the voltage regulator where it is converted to DC and regulated to ~12.5-14.5V. So as long as the engine is running and the stator and voltage regulator are working properly no battery is needed. A battery's purpose is to start the engine and supply temporary over-current when the electrical system demands are beyond the stater ability to handle the load.

I test mine by peeing on the battery terminals.

Re: RZR shuts down when I disconnect the battery

If no battery voltage, how does the regulator know what to output? Does it go all open non regulated voltage, or does it shut the output off? The safest would be to shut the output off. With un regulated voltage it can cause a lot of damage to all electronics unless all electronics is self regulated.

Experience with early motorcycles says a loose ground can cause an overcharge that burns out bulbs. They were simple/basic systems without a regulator as we have today. Regulator was battery voltage feedback. That is way a loose ground would cause an overcharge.

If a system has permanent magnets then it is possible to have output without input. If no permanent magnets, it has to have input to power the coils to produce.

Yes, this ^^^^^ don't do that on a computer controlled machine, you can fry stuff. Even on a non-computer controlled machine you can, just not as expensive of stuff (like your light bulb experience)

Like said before, only check charging with a voltmeter or peeing on the cables...

EDIT: I take that back, peeing on the cables only works for checking plug wires while it's running! Although peeing on things can be fun, battery voltage is too low for that test.
