Texas buyer taxes question?

Hey all. I am looking at getting back into the RZR family. I sold my 2015 4 seater 1k a while back after we had our baby. Our youngest is 3 now and we are done having babies lol. I am looking at a 2019 rzr xp4 1k. I have found one at a local dealer to me and one in oklohoma. I purchased 2 rzr before both from out of state to keep from paying that 6.2 percent taxes on a offroad vehicle. So I talked to a dealer in New Mexico and she said that I will still have to pay those taxes when I get back to Texas and put it in my name. Last time I just took them to tax office and paid the 28 dollars. Does anyone know if that has changed. If im going to have to pay the taxes anyways may as well get from my local dealer but you are talking 18700 vs 20453 is the 2 prices i have got. I am also looking for a good shape used one but no luck.

Re: Texas buyer taxes question?

Yes - you have to pay the sales tax when you file for title (all OHV'S now require title) on the vehicle wheter purchased in state or out of state

Here's a link to the TX Comptrollers site that explains the tax requirement. https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/.../sales-use.php

Texas buyer taxes question?

I picked up a 2019 HLE4 in May from Abernathy’s and got the title put into my name when I got back to Texas. The county does not have a value on off-road vehicles, my title transfer was $31. $3 of that was a convenience fee for using a debit card. When I bought my 2014 xp 1000 from a dealer in Texas I had to pay the taxes on it at time of purchase. If you want to buy in TX and don’t want to pay taxes than buy used from an individual.

Re: Texas buyer taxes question?

Tax office will collect the sales tax based on sales price listed on the Title application form 130-U or the SPV value from VIN look up on the DMV website if the listed sales price is not on the form or is a un-realistic low value

- RZR's are listed in the SPV look up - see attached from TXDMV website calculator - I just bought a used 2014 & sales tax was collected when title was transferred

You must live in a greedy county because Bastrop county and Milam county do not do that.

I know if you buy used you do not have that Tax. I have bought 2 RZR before both from Oklahoma and when I get back to put title in my name and Texas i just paid the 28 dollars both times.

Re: Texas buyer taxes question?

The last rzr was from Abernathy’s in Union City Tennessee. I had no problem getting the title transferred into my name and no taxes paid.

Re: Texas buyer taxes question?

Can't speak for sure on RZR, but on vehicles in general;
1. If you paid sales tax when you bought it, you pay the difference when you register it at home, if higher.
2. If you register it in the state you bought it in, when you register it back home you pay taxes on the value of a used vehicle, not new.

Re: Texas buyer taxes question?

Tricky ground and you may or may not get away with it.

Not sure about Texas, but in NC, since the state doesn't require titling, which would normally be a good time to collect taxes as well. So the tax department will request invoices from dealers in the surrounding states every few years and look for purchases by folks in their state and hit them up for the taxes... and possibly fees and interest. You may not hear from them for 2-3 years, but they'll come around and ask for their money.

Even if you've sold the unit, you're still liable for the tax on the original purchase. I've also heard rare stories of dealers who would not take a trade in unless it either has a title or proof that the taxes were paid on the car.

I’m looking to get rid of this one.....

I've spent most of my money on women, guns, and Harleys. The rest I just wasted.

What he said, for NC anyway.

From what I have found in NC (done it a few times) is you cannot avoid paying taxes when buying from a bordering state (they make you pay at the dealership). So we went to WV to buy and they told us to pay the taxes in NC. We failed to do so on every occasion..... Got caught about 2.5 years later on one and didnt even own the RZR anymore. Charged us taxes plus a fee, the fee wasnt much.
