Idaho flag Western Montana rides

Now that I'm back from the Black Hills, I'm looking for those awesome rides in Western Montana. I prefer areas that offer a lot of riding as opposed to 5000- acre ohv type parks. Any ideas?

Re: Western Montana rides

All your National Forest will have lots of open roads for riding. Look at their Motor Vehicle Use Map. Should be able to download them from their websites.

Idaho flag Re: Western Montana rides

Thanks to all who responded. I'm very familiar with riding N. ID from Lewiston north. As reported Wallace and the "Joe" are cool but "been there done that". Rather than just take off on forest service roads, I'm hoping for those special places. Seely lake and the belts sound interesting. Anyone ever ride around White Sulphur springs or Melrose. Thanks in advance

Will do Ron.

Have you ever done the Magruder Rd from Elk City to Darby? Did it 2 weeks ago, Stayed in the Red River Campground first night. Second day we traveled the corridor (113 miles) to Darby and stayed in the Mountain Spirit Inn. Third day we went to the Darby ranger station where they showed us some excellent trails to ride. Had a ball. Fourth day we headed back over the Magruder back to Red River Campground. The Red River Hotsprings was also open so we took a little splash there. was a great trip.

Ron,

Just got back from a great 4 days in Seeley Lake.

1) We stayed at the Seeley Lake FS CG. Very clean and easy access to the tails, minutes away. Other campgrounds close by that can handle large RVs are River Point and Big Larch. None filled up until Thursday afternoon. Arriving on Tuesday we found multiple open sites. Due to Montana law and proximity we rode the rzr to town to get groceries, fuel, eat out, etc. without any problems (us and 10 or so other rzrs). There's a Polaris dealer in town as well.

2) We rode on the east side of hwy 83. The Seeley-Swan valley is bounded by the snowcapped Mission range to the west and the rock-faced Swan range to the east (the western boundary of the Bob complex). There are great views everywhere you look. The first day we rode 6 hours on Rice Ridge and the 2nd day rode 7 hours on Richmond Ridge. Rice and Richmond are In-line running south-southeast to north-northwest with Rice being the southern one. Never rode the same trail twice. Some of the best riding was up to the horse packer trailheads that lead into the Bob. We rode up to trailheads (and then hiked into) for Clearwater Lake & Morrell Falls. Don't forget the bear spray. Was a grizzly frequenting our campground and lots of sign out on the roads/trails. Deer and huckleberries everywhere. Son in law works for the FS at the Seeley Ranger Station and told us you can see into Glacier NP from Richmond Ridge on a non smokey day.

3) There's much more riding to the west of hwy 83 we didn't get to. Also more southeast of Seeley on the east side of hwy 83. Easily 3 more days of riding. People were very friendly and glad we were there, unlike some of the more heavily visited MT areas.

4) Used our iPad on a RAM mount for navigation. Started with the MVUM on Aventi Maps but son-in-law recommended purchasing ($5) the Lolo NF Visitor Map for Seeley Lake (Seeley Lake Road West 1/2/2014). HUGE difference, The MVUM doesn't show many of the roads that exist. The Visitor Map shows all the roads plus topography and points of interest. There are no 50" roads in this Ranger District but the existing larger roads seem lightly-traveled (granted we weren't there on a weekend) and in good shape. Some are as narrow as a single track with turnouts.

5) Will be going back in Oct. to watch a prescribed burn of a portion of the lower west flank of the Swan Range. Hopefully will get a front row seat up on Rice Ridge and look across the canyon to the Swan front where the fire will be. Cant't wait.

Excellent place to ride if you like to cruise, enjoy the views, pick huckleberries, and watch for wild life. Not the best for folks that like to ride fast and hard on a Turbo, etc.

First pic is from Rice ridge across the drainage to it's east & to the Swan Range and the start of the Bob. The second pic is from Richmond Ridge looking east toward the Swans. Third pic is my wonderful co pilot at Clearview Lake. Fourth is another shot of Clearview Lake. Fifth is the Visitor Map on Aventi. It's a shame the pics don't show the splendor of the Swans. This rock faces are nearly straight up. Their elevation gain is nearly 3000 feet in less than a quarter mile. Damn wide-angle lens!!!.

Any questions, give me a shout.

Rick
