RZR accident, lots of questions

So I was driving along the road behind the Mississippi River levee (still had flooded back water and some current) checking culverts and gates for farmers. None of their tractors could make it past a few washouts at the entrance. On my way back I stopped when my cell phone started getting notifications and text messages (didnít have a signal until I got close to levee), so for several minutes Iím just sitting there with maybe 3-4Ē water running over the gravel road beneath me, I felt the RZR shift and decided Iíd finish looking at phone once I got to the levee, put her in gear, touch the gas, and the road washed out from under my drivers side front and rear tires and pulls me into a 7 foot washout. I barely made it out of the machine. I was fighting some current, the lights were still on and my winch was working. And NO, I didnít get it shut off in time due to the current, so sheís hydrolocked. I tried to winch her out but after two hours of trying, I had to walk away from her. That was Thursday night (7/11), we finally got her out yesterday (7/14). I have Progressive full coverage with $10k add on, $1000 deductible, I also have Torque group total loss, and GAP coverage.

My question is, since this thing was underwater for 2 and a half days, and it does have some cosmetic damage also, what are the odds that they do not consider this a total loss?

I can't believe they would not total it out

Re: RZR accident, lots of questions

We deal with Progressive in insurance claims a lot. I can see this going either way, depending on the adjuster.

The problem youíll have is the accessory coverage. They pay 100% on accessories with no depreciation. So if you have $10000 in accessories, the amount they would have to pay you is the market value of the RZR, plus $10,000. Assuming the market value is $17000, they would pay you $27000 minus your deductible. To total it, the repairs would need to be around 70% of that, or almost $19000. Thatís unlikely. I just used the $17000 market value as an example, so yours may be more or less.

You can fix a lot of damage for $19000.

If you need help or have any questions, feel free to call the shop. Weíd be happy to answer any questions.

Re: RZR accident, lots of questions

I did a quick KBB value and it showed $11,905, and in adding up my add ons, I am slightly over $10k, so by your math, I may be needing $15,333 in repairs before they consider a total loss. I do have pannels damaged, lights, I'm sure you can imagine, and add the fact that it smells like a bag of smashed a$$&oles right now.... I know that doesn't count but daumn.

I was just trying to give you a perspective on how they look at a claim.

Your area could have a different percent of value than 70. It could be lower, probably not higher. Also, if a lot of accessories are destroyed, that will help. If you have $10000 in shocks, suspension, wheels and tires, they arenít going to be destroyed by water so not part of the repair cost making it difficult to total.

Iíve found Progressive claims adjusters very willing to work toward an outcome that makes the customer happy. They seem to want to keep you as a customer.

Hope your experience is similar.

Boy you are lucky you got out of that thing alive.
A Friend of mine ripped his front end out of his can am a couple weeks ago. Dealer said they would total it. He has progressive . The adjuster said new frame and front suspension no total. The dealer and adjuster went round and round said no way he could do the work that adjuster wanted done for the hours allotted. He turned the work away and now at another dealer. This is in New Hampshire .

RZR accident, lots of questions

Yes Iím very luck no doubt. It looked like my cage is twisted, my aluminum roof is bent all to hell, all my stereo equipment is ruined, I canít be certain but I think the frame may also be twisted. My turbo hood is gone, all fenders and panels are scratched and chipped from the rocks, primary clutch disintegrated, my winch is fried, all of my LED lights are full of water including my headlights, I feel like I need to be getting the water out of the engine and airbox but I hate to touch it until adjuster looks at it. Notified Progressive on Friday, still no call from adjuster, Iíve been working the claim through the mobile app though. Sent him a message and still no call or email.

Can Am frames are one piece and the book time to replace one is 40-45 hours depending on model. Depending on the shop, labor rates average $120 an hour, so $5000 in labor plus the frame, and whatever they replaced on the front suspension, wouldnít be enough to total it.

A lot if dealers hate insurance work because it takes time to get parts, so they have a wrecked machine sitting around. It can take months to get a frame sometime. Better to total it and sell a new one in the dealers opinion.

Problem is, a lot of people donít have enough coverage for accessories or to cover depreciation, so having it totaled hurts them financially.

You can check for frame damage by looking at the powder coat. If itís chipped out, itís usually from being bent or twisted. Look at everywhere the cage is bolted on and the suspension, as those are usually where the bends happen.

Just an FYI, Progressive is running two weeks out in the Denver area, so it could be the case there also.

Just got a call from Progressive, they state they are about a week behind, so I will not see an adjuster until next week, Iím borrowing a borescope to see what the tranny, engine, and diffs look like inside. I just have to document and take photos of anything Iím inspecting.

Anyone know if GDP portals can handle being submerged in 7í of water for days? Should I ask Superatv directly?
