Colorado Trails out of Buena Vista

Update for anyone wanting to hit the High Mountain Trails.

Mt. Antero: Multiple Avalanches have blocked the trail with up to 8-10 feet of snow along with trees and large rocks. The trail is blocked where you come into the canyon and the river is next to the trail.

Hancock pass: Trail head isn’t accessible as there are areas along the road with multiple feet of snow blocking access to the trail.

Tincup Pass: Trail is closed due to avalanche danger. It is posted on the sign before starting the trail.

Mary Murphy Mine/ Pomeroy Lake: the trail is blocked by significant snow at the Mary Murphy Aerial Tramway.

Re: Colorado Trails out of Buena Vista

Thanks CORZR!

Knew Tincup & Hancock was still closed.

We are headed to Taylor next week. Might end up drinking more beer and sitting by the fire than riding.

Re: Colorado Trails out of Buena Vista

Dangit....was scheduled to camping out in BV next week with my wife & parents, taking 2 RVs and our XP Turbo.
Any suggestions on dispersed camping and good trails within 3 hours from Denver? Fairly new to exploring CO, last year our first trip was to Taylor Park in July and it was amazing.

You are correct. Taylor Park is an amazing place to go! Not sure how far Sargents, Co is for you but it’s a fun place too. Or you could drive the longer way to Taylor Park going through Gunnison. Lots of moisture this year so bring plenty of bug spray as the mosquitoes are thick!

Thanks for the info.
Headed up to that same area in 3 weeks. Hopefully everything will be open. But I'm guessing there may be some snow still present.

There is still going to be a lot more than "some" snow.

Tincup may still be closed. Heading up Friday. Will try and post updates as cell service permits.

Cottonwood is not supposed to open until August 12. Add ~3 hours to the drive.

Re: Colorado Trails out of Buena Vista

Up in Taylor right now.

Tincup:
Closed. Mirror lake is so full, that it looks as though the trail is covered in about 6' of water. Honestly, if I didn't know it was there, I wouldn't have ever thought it was possible to drive around that lake. No idea from the St Elmo side, as I have been struggling to find a way to get there.

Napoleon Pass:
Partially open. We made it past Old Gold Cup Mine (open by the way), and about half way through the trail. We made it through some really deep snow drifts, but got stopped in our tracks by some drifts that didn't appear to end that were about 4-6' high. We might have given it a go, but got a distress call from one of the RZRs in our group that were stuck at Dorchester CG with a dead battery. Pretty impressed that the Rugged Radio setup was communicating over that distance, but that is another topic.

Slaughterhouse Gultch:
Open, nothing crazy here.

Union Canyon:
Open, but a lot of water.

We are going to try to see how far we can make it on Italian Creek today and possibly Tellurium Creek. Hoping for the best, since we want some challenge while we are out here.

Ok, so no luck on Italian Creek. We made it to the cabin right before the mine. The whole valley before the mine is nothing but snow. Unfortunately it's not the kind of snow you can just blast through either. It's more the type of snow that you'll likely be leaving your machine there for a while if you try. So.....

Tomorrow we will hopefully try for tellurium. Wanted to go there today, but one of the RZRs is having either a stator or voltage regulator issue. Thanks to Rocky Mountain, we should be full strength tomorrow, that is if we don't get distracted by the dirt bikes and some single track.

Well, we failed Tellurium Creek as well. There were some pretty deep snow drifts that we were able to push through, but about 1/4 mile from the top we were stopped by a relatively long drift that didn't offer enough run to make it across. We are down to winches, and let could've made it with a winch on the lead car. I'd bet that with this warmer weather and a couple of brave souls, someone should be able to get to the top by next week.

Re: Colorado Trails out of Buena Vista

What do you think it will look like by the end of July?
Have a trip planed first of August and wondering if the snow does melt will there be too much water for some of the creek crossings.

Based on what I saw, I think you'll be fine in August. I think by mid July we would have been over a few of the passes. Certain things, such as Tin cup pass are likely closed all year, but others I'd expect will be passable.

On a side note, you can get to the lake on Taylor pass, but snowed out from there.
