Re: Silverton Colorado next month. Routing help.

We just moved our annual ride to Silverton from mid August to first week of September.

Went up to visit relatives in Leadville this weekend. I have not seen this much snow in our mountains for 40+ years.

Our spring run-off (snow starting to melt and filling the streams & rivers) usually starts around the end of April. It is just starting!!!! The Arkansas river is flowing like nothing I have ever seen.

Tincup pass will be lucky if it even opens this year.

Last year the was a new gas station that was open on the OHV route so you didn’t have to tote fuel cans across 550 on your street vehicle to avoid the 75$ fee. 2 questions:
1. Is it still open?
2. Now that I have a turbo this year, do they sell higher octane?

Re: Silverton Colorado next month. Routing help.

This is an interesting thread. I've spent the past couple of weekends in S Central UT, on the Paiute ATV trail. Same situation with all of the higher elevation trails still snowed in. Lots of run off starting to come down, and the valley rivers are running strong. Should be a wild riding season.

Re: Silverton Colorado next month. Routing help.

Just listening to the radio driving home from work.

Arapahoe Basin ski resort is going to be open until June 28. That is close to Vail.

Have only seen a ski resort open until almost the first week of July in my entire life in this state. 5th generation CO Native.

Heading to Taylor Park next weekend, Cottonwood & Tincup pass are both closed. Cottonwood is supposed to open Aug 12. Tincup may not open at all this year.

WOW! did we get some snow this year.

Looking forward to your updates! Thank you!!!

And to update our trip status. We postponed our trip to Silverton to the last week of August based on the information in this thread. I was able to get reservations and my buddy has reservations at either Red Mountain RV or Silver Summit RV.

I really appreciate everyone stepping up and responding with the detailed information!!!

I will get the suggested Colorado book on the way along with our utv permits.

Anything special we need to know on equipping our UTV's? We all rock crawl pretty heavily so we have armor/winches ect. Do we need to carry extra fuel? If so what is the accepted method for the area?

Law enforcement? I am guessing spark arrester must be intact ect., windshield? helmet?

Thanks!

Re: Silverton Colorado next month. Routing help.

Stay on the marked routes in Silverton, don't drive your rzr across 550 for fuel, layer up on clothing, be sure to have rain gear, bring extra water, if the ladies are along spend a day in Silverton playing tourist., It's a cool little mountain town. It's a truly amazing place to ride but be cautious on the shelf trails. Have fun!

Re: Silverton Colorado next month. Routing help.

We are here in Silverton. Its 46F today and 27F tonight. Rain and frozen rain all day and maybe snow this evening. Snow going up to Animas Forks is 100 deep from a slide. May not even open this summer. Too much snow and no place to put it and all the rocks, trees and debris. They are trying to get other passes open, but no luck so far. Maybe in a couple weeks. Many more rides in the area blocked from snow. You can ride on some of the lower trails, but because other areas are blocked these trails will be crowded. Youll be washing lots of mud off to.
Not a good year to ride here.

Ill do some riding and try to get better area info from real time rides.

Re: Silverton Colorado next month. Routing help.

Roger .we were there two weeks ago, for a week.....we left a couple days early and went down to Farmington to Glade Run Recreation Area and Chokecherry Canyon......Just an idea if you run out of open trail options in Silverton/Ouray area.

Re: Silverton Colorado next month. Routing help.

When we were there two weeks ago, we were checked by BLM(Scot Jackson....great guy, has been in Silverton with BLM since 1970) for UTV permits, no helmets required, or spark arrestor check. I have been doing the Silverton, Alpine Loop, Ouray since 1978 in many types of off road vehicles......Now XP 1000. have never had to carry extra fuel. Looking forward to your updates when you go. I hope this helps.

Re: Silverton Colorado next month. Routing help.

First week of summer in Colorado and its cold & raining in the metro area. Our fireplace is actually running right now in the living room. Predicting snow in the mountains this weekend.

WOW! What a year for snow in Colorado.
