Look at the Facebook page "High Altitude Adventures LLC" . Seems to be an outfit that rents OHVs that is actively documenting the open lower trails around Lake City.

We may not get to do the high altitude trails that most of us are used to. But, it appears there might be quite a few interesting trails out there to try.

Re: Silverton Colorado next month. Routing help.

Currently the San Juan mountains are sitting at 1586% of 30 year average for SWE (Snow Water Equivalent). There is a very small amount of trails opened as of right now. They are having a hard time due to the enormous amounts of avalanches we had this year to cut through the snow. On top of the that when they cut the trails, they are having to go back again as the high snow banks are sliding down, blocking the trail. Silverton and the other agencies are trying their hardest to get them open, but it will be later summer that we can ride the majority of the trails.

Does anyone have any maps of these other trails that are open? Only maps I find are of the alpine loop?

Ride there almost every year. This book is worth its weight in gold and covers Taylor Park too which is also fantastic and more challenging.

Re: Silverton Colorado next month. Routing help.

We just got home from a week in Silverton and a few days in Farmington. I have done the area since 1978......the most snow I have ever seen(including the dead of winter). County Road 2 to Anamis Forks has a major slide over 300yds wide and still 60+ feet deep at the junction to Picayune Gulch. The county has abandoned clearing this and are trying to get to Animas Forks through Hurricane Pass and California Gulch......they are currently about Lake Como. But, if they get to Animas Forks this way...nothing is open passed there......Engineer Pass or Cinnamon Pass. You can get up Cunningham Gulch, off of CR 2 a ways, but they have just started clearing Stony Pass Rd. You can go up Minnie and Maggie off CR 2 aprox 2 miles. CR 10 out of Silverton to Hurricane Gulch you can get several miles......although the Cork Screw turn off is about 12 ft deep. The North side of the Alpine Loop has a major slide between Enginner Pass and Lake City at Capitol City. Black Bear is Snowed in just right off of US 550. We got to the Notch on Ophir Pass. Mineral Creek( start off of US 550 between Silverton and Ouray) Is a good little rough rock trail , open aprox 3 miles, normally takes you up to Engineer Pass. Yankee Boy, at Ouray is open past the Governors Basin Fork aprox 3 miles. The Imogene Pass turn off of Yankee Boy is completely snowed in. There are currently 475 plus slides in the back country from Purgatory to Ouray. I advise go anyways…...you will see things, that will never be again in a lifetime. You will drive through massive slides, cut with a dozer as much as 30ft deep. Many complete hillside forest reduced to toothpicks( no exaggeration )…...massive amounts of running water. Be advised the County Dozer operators are working 10 hr days....doing all they can do and are making progress. I hope this helps some.
