Michigan Street Legal Questions

Have some questions regarding the street legal process for Michigan.

I believe I install the necessary parts, have it inspected by a police officer, bring all my documents to the SOS (title? Tr54? And insurance?), then set an appt for the vin placement?
Does the SOS conduct a second inspection when they instal the VIN?
Also what are people doing for a street legal parking brake? Thank you in advanced.

I have a 2017 1000xp ride command and as of right now I have turn signals front and rear installed, DOT windshield and tires, mirrors, and license plate mount and light.

Re: Michigan Street Legal Questions

1.Make sure you can get insurance. You wonít actually get a policy until you get the new vin. State Farm seems to be the answer.

2. Have all necessary parts on machine. Good luck on the parking brake. Nobody is manufacturing ityet. A few people have made there own modifications to pass inspections.

3. Call your local sheriff or police dept to have tr-54 inspection. I hear some or all of the State police post are not inspecting vehicles.

4. Take all paperwork. Tr-54, title, and all receipts parts put on machine to make it street legal. If you have a lien on your title then make sure your loan institution gives you a letter stating they are ok with you making it street legal.

5. Take all this to the sos and be prepared to pay taxes on all items that you havenít already paid taxes for plus the $25 process fee.

6. Wait.

7. Wait.

8. 6-8 weeks someone will call you to make an appointment to put the vin on your vehicle. The first question they ask before coming out is if you have the correct parking brake that is separate from the normal braking system. They will inspect the vehicle again.

9. Get insurance.

10. Go to sos with proof of insurance and then you can get the vehicle registered and given a paper plate.

11. Wait for the real plate.

This is pretty darn close. If I missed something Iím sure someone will add it. Good luck. Iím stuck on the parking brake. Spoke with maxxed out motor sports and they are thinking they should have something for my vehicle in a month or two.

How are people making parking brakes that pass the inspection?

OEM/factory bumpers (faciaís) suffice or no?

Do you mean Polaris accessory bumpers? If so, yes.

So how the rzrís come factory doesnít suffice? You have to have an aftermarket bumper of some sort? The TR54 form says required on passenger vehicles.

Re: Michigan Street Legal Questions

Yes, you will need an aftermarket bumper.

I just talked to the sos officer who would put the vin on my machine when and if I get the proper parking brake for my rzr. I do have the approval letter for an assembled vehicle form the sos.

He stressed how difficult it has been for some to secure insurance.

Re: Michigan Street Legal Questions

Ok thank you for clarifying. Itís pretty irritating how hard they making this. When I did my 2012 900xp back in 2012, it wasnít this difficult.

According to my insurance agent, they way my full coverage it set up for my 2017 xp, he said is ok for road use. As far the SOS goes, am I just bringing them proof of insurance or is there more to it?

It is required to state Michigan no fault on your paper work otherwise it is just for off road. That is what we have to show them each year when we renew.

So the proof of insurance has to say no fault?

Thought I was clear. Yes the proof of insurance that you show at SOS has Michigan No Fault insurance on the top line.
