1000cc limit question

Having a little discussion on our club page on this issue....
Does anyone have any info on where this limit originated and is it actually a law, Vehicle Code or just a manufacturers agreement with the insurance companies ....

anyone?

I've asked this question many times myself. I think it has more to do with insurance companies anymore. As big as sxs's are getting 1000cc in my eyes isn't enough if you look at power to weight ratios. The turbo rzrs still have room to grow since they are 935cc but most all others are pushed up against that 999cc wall. I'm very interested in the 1000cc limit and others inputs as well.

It's classified as an ROV now.

The manufacturers presented their wish list to the California legislature on what they would like to be mandated safety requirements. The fact it would limit lawsuits never entered their mind .

The safety bill passed without objection, nobody heard about it.

It wasn't until just before it was time to implement it that the public was made aware. The bill was then tweaked to make it more palatable to the public. 50 horsepower helmet, 500 horsepower no helmet. Makes a ton of sense.

This is why whenever someone states they heard a bigger motor is on the horizon I just laugh. The manufacturers would not open the door to litigation that probably cost them a pretty penny in "campaign contributions" to close.

I don't know if other states have adopted similar safety regulations but as in other things where California goes, so goes the nation.

Re: 1000cc limit question

Part of the discussion here is Arkansas current law is 1000cc and less than 75 inches in width, there is a bill that removes the 1000cc section ....dont think I like it too well. I think it will open the door for insurance companies to raise our rates

Re: 1000cc limit question

While many will disagree, I'm of the opinion that 1000cc's is more than enough in the woods or the dunes. Cranking up the HP will just crank up the crash rate.

It’s your choice if you want to to take that chance or not! You don’t need someone telling you what they think is ok!

He is talking about the roxor not a RZR. A roxor is that Jeep looking utv thing with a 2500cc turbo diesel. It's considered a utv somehow.

Re: 1000cc limit question

Why not build a 250HP+ 1300cc turbo Polaris RZR ? Offer it for sale in states that dont have that 1000cc law.

Although I might agree partially with this, when we have this thought process we strangle innovation and that’s not healthy. Somewhere along the line certain people thought giving up a little liberty for the sake of safety was worth it.......

Interesting, I had never seen or heard of it; thanks and apologies. Now I read Jeep has filed lawsuit to keep it out of the USA as a Willys Jeep copy. A 2500cc turbo diesel only rated at 62HP, that's sad... Mazda, Toyota and Mitsubishi all have turboD in that size range making twice that HP. I don't think it would be registered by various states as a SxS due to engine size.

From the Honda Forum:
It was explained to me by a person who deals with such things that the major manufactures have become members of this organization.

http://www.rohva.org/

This organization has imposed a 1000cc limit for its member companies, for their recreational off-highway vehicles, to be defined as a ROV the machine must meet certain requirements. 1000cc limit on engine size is one of them. These are guidelines used by state and federal agencies to grant or restrict land access, enforce DOT registration requirements and tax laws.

It's not that a SXS can't have a 1001cc engine or greater, it's that it would not be considered a ROV and could be subject to other regulations and requirements that an ROV is not likely to be subject to.
