""chatter" noise coming from trans or clutch

After a couple hours of desert riding I noticed a slight chatter coming from the rear of the machine when I just barely touch the throttle. I happens until the clutch engages. It kind of sounds like gears grinding ever so slightly. When the car begins to roll it stops. The next day I started the car and backed it out of the driveway and took it for a short ride down the street. It did not make the sound. I'm assuming it only does it when its hot. I have not taken it out since, I'm afraid I may damage something. It's a 2018 xp4 1000, 1300 miles. Any Ideas?

Thanks!

I had a chattering noise coming from the rear of my machine. It sounded metalic, like gears grinding or something, I thought for sure it was my rear end. After doing a little poking around I found it was the belt slapping against the plastic cover. The belt was shot and starting to wear a groove in the clutch cover. Different machines I know, but maybe worth looking at first before digging deeper. Good luck

Thanks for the responses, I'll pull the cover today and have a look at the belt and the pucks. For what it's worth I'm still on the original belt. @Hunterworks I've been putting off adding your rollers as I'm hesitant that I may screw something up. I'm pretty mechanically inclined I just dont fully understand how the clutches operate. I'll have to watch your videos again. Do you sell only 2 rollers or do I have to purchase 4? Thanks again

Well I got your rollers and tried to get the secondary off...Christ that bolt's on tight. I used an 1/4" impact Driver, as I don't have a 1/2 inch. Wouldn't budge. Couldn't get it with a wrench as it would spin. Can I put it in gear and use a 1/2" ratchet or will I damage the trans?

Should be able to get it loose with a 3/8 ratcher, but escalate to 1/2 ratcher, then Breaker bar... might be loctited from factory and have to overcome it. I see almost every hunterworks video involves a torch.

It has to be the blue paste loctite polaris puts on the bolt from the factory, the bolt isn’t actually torqued down all that much.

Easiest way to release the loctite is to use a heat gun or a torch and spot heat just the bolt head.

Keep it within a reasonable temp range when heating and don’t go too far as in turning it nearly red because if your reusing the bolt as you can heat it too much with a torch causing it to become too hard which then causes it to be brittle and next time you tighten or remove you can break the head off, and with extreme heat you can do this to the input shaft on the trans and the clutch itself which doesn’t take well to extreme heat.

If you use a torch take note to some of the pros videos who do it often.

Make sure you reapply loctite and torque correctly. I’ve seen them come out several times while riding even when torqued correctly. I’ve also seen several stretch and Gauld the threads from too tight.

When heating the bolt, heat for 30 seconds then stop. Let the heat sink downwards from the head into the threads for 10-20 seconds then repeat so you don’t have to do unnecessary heating or tempering damage.

Hope all works out have a good day
