Best tire and wheel combo for ...

... rock crawling and rocky trail riding? Any one use their RZR primarily for rock crawling and rocky trail riding? I'm looking at tire and wheel combo's for this application but it seems that most people on here are doing high-speed desert driving.

Finally something I think the Goodyear MTR's might be good at, but maybe not for mostly rock crawling, for that I would think some thing like the
Kenda Bear Claw, grabbing knobs all over these things..

The stock tires on stock steel rims are working great for me. I wouldn't want to mess up aluminum on the rocks. I got a full set of stock take-offs for $150 as backups. I use 1 for the spare now and will swap them all out when the time comes.

Bighorns IMO are the best rock/desert tire. Also do well in the sand.

Stock rims are best "bang" for the buck.

Rock rash always looks cool on stock rims

I have heard that the Bighorns don’t hold up in the rock very well. But I’ve watched the Dakar and the 4x4 quads are running them so they must be ok.

The tread on the Bighorns looks like it would be good on the rocks ... nice, big lugs that you could sipe for better grip on wet rocks and better squirm in the mud.

The ITP Terracross looks like a good tread pattern too.

FatTire, it looks like you're running Bighorns on the rig in your avatar. How do they hold up to rocks, big sticks, etc?

As far as wheels go, I was wondering if anyone was airing down on rocks and running beadlocks.

I used Bighorns on my Rhino in the desert and rock crawling (Rubicon). They work great. A bit heavy for serious dune use though.

Re: Best tire and wheel combo for ...

I'm running 27x9 on all four corners. That picture is from the Vegas 300 I did in October, 196 miles of pure punishment. Raced Ironman Quad, took first, the others weren't running Bighorns.

IMO, with these lightweight machines, airing down is not really necessary to make a big difference in traction. I've been down to 3psi with no bead problems.

Re: Best tire and wheel combo for ...

Thanks for the info. I've only gotten into ATV's in the last year and have only been out a couple times on my Polaris 400. I originally bought it to push snow and got hooked on playing in the rocks with it.

The RZR looks like it will be a blast and my son can ride along safely.

Anyone running the Terracrosses?

Re: Best tire and wheel combo for ...

IMHO the Bighorns are the best so far in the rocks and general trail riding. I have some mud tires of sorts (XTRs) that I put on when things get real wet and I'm planning on getting dirty.

Re: Best tire and wheel combo for ...

Thanks again for all the help. If I can get the guy I'm buying my RZR from to call me back ... and I can actually get it home ... I think I'll go with 26" Bighorns on 14" T7 beadlocks.
