Re: What is the best 3/4 truck?

A few points i'd like to make. Dont get caught in the hp/torque wars. My dad has a 96 12v cummins dodge dually and pulls a 38' 5th wheel camper with it on the interstate, through the mountains, etc and theres never anybody waiting to pass. That truck i believe is rated somewhere around 180hp and 450ft-lbs. As far as towing goes, the HP/Torque wars will always be marketing. I personally have a 06 dodge 5.9 cummins 3/4 ton and wouldnt have it any other way. The interiors in the ford and chevy trucks were nicer, but.........the chances of this cummins going 500,000 miles are far and beyond that of the other two "V" configuration engines. The fuel mileage is good. ~ 21 hwy with 33" tires and the auto transmissions are no longer the problem they once were. The pros of the dodge outweigh the cons which in my truck would only be the interior. The seats are somewhat junky.

IF i were to get another truck it would probably still be a dodge due to the cummins motor. my 2nd choice would be a chevy, but i wish they would revamp the body on that thing. the 3rd choice would be ford.

my other point is what i've seen at big campgrounds (1000+ camper sites) Back in the 90s it was pretty much split 50/50 between ford and dodge. in the early 2000s you had a split of probably 40% ford, 40% dodge, 20% chevy. In the mid 2000s it seemed ford made a surge because of the financial troubles of chevy and dodge. Then, last year i noticed 50% were chevy trucks probably due to the fact of GM putting huge rebates at the time. Bottom line is that people seem to be happy with any of them for the most part and will typically go after the cheapest option if nothing else sways their decision like dodge transmissions pre 48RE, or fords 6.0 liter/constant engine change, or chevy's bankruptcy.

Re: What is the best 3/4 truck?

I know everybody was raised to like one brand or anouther but i have had all three trucks and for comfort and power i would you with the duramax and the allison trans great combo with dodge 2nd the cummins is also a great motor no doubt about it and the new one rides pretty good just a little stiffer and the back seat sits more vertical than the chevy unless u get a mega cab and the ford has not had the engine resolved since the 7.3 was at the ford store the other day and they had at least 25 6.0 sitting there blew up and some of the newer 2009 and 10's out there with problems and i think the fords always rode stiffer but that is my opinion. One other good thing my buddies own a racing shop and do high performance parts and dynoing and they have been installing a new program and new exhaust on the new duramax and does away with all that emmisions cleaner and they said they will fly now!

One of the most intelligent posts I've read in a while on this subject.

Re: What is the best 3/4 truck?

We had the same ? when we where shopping, we got the 2006 chev 3/4 ton diesel. My husband did some research and the tow diff between a 3/4 and a 1 ton wasn't much diff. we love it and we can't even feel our toyhauler behind us!

You're right, there isnt much difference at all between a 3/4 and a 1ton when speaking of a single wheel rear axle, but if you're talking dual wheels on the 1 ton, the stability is priceless if you need it.

You may want to check your facts before you go around spreading false info.

Both the Ford and GM will both walk all over the Dodge in towing power and most importantly fuel milage. Adding urea to the fords and gm trucks is no big deal and it will cost you around 2-3 bucks extra every 1000 miles. The fuel milage MORE than makes up for that. You do have to fill the urea tank around every oil change (7-10k miles). Go test drive all 3 and buy the one that suites you. BTW the trucks will start and they give you plenty of warning ~1000 miles before they need urea added.
What am I missing here? I have about 50,000 on my 08 Duramax and have never added anything to it so it will keep starting/running (besides the normal oil/fluid changes and fuel).

I really, really like my GMC DM. At the same time I really like the space in the Dodge Mega Cab. But since I don't ride back there it's not that big a deal.

You may want to look into re-sale values too.

I think you hit on a good point. All three make competitive options. I ended up with my 2010 ford 350 mainly because Ford had huge rebates on all the left overs this fall. I probably would have been just as happy with a chevy or a dodge. Wonder what would happen if any of the other manufacturers were to come out with 3/4 or 1 ton diesel trucks?
