Okay guys went to River Run this weekend and it was great except for the storm and all our crap getting wet. Looking at some options here. I do NOT want a toy hauler cause I think RVs are junk. Looking at the enclosed trailers with living quarters in the front but at about $20K I think it is a little too much for the budget. We dont mind tent camping just want some dry stuff. We dont plan on staying out a week at a time or anything like that where we need showers and stuff. We can all pee in the woods. Dont get me wrong all that is nice but $20K for that vs. $6-9K for an enclosed trailer is alot of money. Looking at about 24'. Here is a kicker. I do want some beds and such....foldout, etc. Post up some pics or some threads to something like what Im talking about. Did a search but it only got me about 10 posts and didnt find any of them very helpful. thanks!

Been there, done that! (swimming in the tent) Never again! We bought a 7x14 V nose aluminum trailer with a rear ramp door, and an RV style side door...the kind with a paddle latch, not a cam bar lock. I have painted the interior white, added lighting, shelving, 30 tie down loops, E-Track on the floor and a nice rubber mat that the RZR fits on 100%. We unload the RZR, and have a Coleman double high queen matress that sets up in 5 minutes. Also added a $100 portapot, and I made a wooden frame out of 1x12's so it is ADA height for the bride. The entire project, start to finish? $5400! I am adding a Polar Cub roof top AC unit so my 2K generator can run it if we dry camp.
After 34 years of camping, and owning a variety of rigs over the years, this is by far and away the most fun we've had. I will post picks tomorrow. BTW, you can get a 20' model for around $6k raw, and finish it up as far as you want or need to!

There is a company that makes the fold down beds and tables for most RV companies by the name of flexsteel I think. You might be able to buy direct or go thru camping world.

Not doing the truckbed camper thing, rodeo camper, whatever you wanna call it...BUT I do have a friend that has one I can maybe pick up pretty cheap and use the stuff out of it to outfit an enclosed trailer to my likings. Not real concerned with having a toilet. We can crap/pee in the woods, even my fiancee cause she is cool like that. Mainly just wanting some beds, table, stereo, etc to make life at camp fun instead of wet and sucky.

What are some good name enclosed trailers? I know Pace, etc. But dont wanna buy John Deere name brand stuff when I can buy the same stuff for thousands cheaper. Here is a little kicker. Im also into the rockcrawling crowd and have a rig that is about 83" wide and about 7' tall so I need that much room to house that if I decide to take it sans the RZR. Its way heavier than a RZR so need bigger axles to accomodate that weight.

I posted this in an earlier thread..and I'll keep doing it untill I can buy an RV!!

Call me basic and "cheap" right now...But I have a 24' enclosed car hauler 2010 brand new...We haul our RAZR and my sons 170 ect....8K generator in there as well as all the camping stuff...Once I unload it.. I just close up the back, we use the side door, We have those air up queen size beds with the stands under em' My wife turns that trailer into a little house all 24' worth of it.. we have a kitchen table bed lights ect...generator runs it all.. Sometimes on long trips I even throw in the small fridge...If I havnt bought an RV to pull it to Glamis next year, thats what Ill be doing..If I get an RV, well then I guess my days of "slumming" it are over..(and it "aint" slummin, cause the wife really sets it up NICE!!) Sometimes when i get back after going for a 30 min ride and walk in, You would swear you were standing in an RV setup with everything from heating and airconditioning to lights and a kitchen...They sell portable everything now-a-days!! Just a thought......My wife wont sleep in a tent....Too many bears in Alaska..But this Trailer is GREAT!!

Did you make that?? Its really cool!! I like that A LOT!! I would love to do that to my 24Ft enclosed and If I get my RV, still bring it and when I go to places like Glamis or with friends thay can take it!! That would be great!!:):)

Wow thats weird Half my post vanished. Thanks, Yep I made it. Its got Gas hotwater heater, AC, Bathroom with shower, sink and toilet. Has 46 gallon freshwater tank, 15 black water and 36 greywater. Power converter, Radio with Cd player and MP3 hook up. Two speakers inside, two outside. Few other odd and ends. To bad you have an S lol. I'm selling my trailer now for 8500 OBO.. It fit my standard RZR very well. But now since I've added a LT, doors, ect. Its a tight fit through the back door. I'm going to sell this one and build a 7 foot wide.. mine is 6'x14' Weights about 2800Lb dry.

FWIW I couldn't agree more with you on toy haulers.. Growing up my family had an RV dealer ship.. Campers are built pretty damn cheap.. From what I've seen they are only worse now. Steel framed cargo trailer is the way to go IMO.. Built better and won't fall about in a couple months if it gets a leak..

Oh no, Im good, mines at 68 1/2" (RZR) wide and I still have a almost a foot of of room on each side in my 24Ft trailer..Mine is a 24 ft enclosed car hauler..I can even pull my wifes 2010 dodge ram 1500 Laramie inside this trailer...Thats why I am so excited about what you did!! Its really cool!!

I can actually see doing something like this.. I plan to get an RV but it seems like every time I go camping I bring someone along or I meet someone out there and I think it would be so cool if I had an RV towing this, and was able to say..hey, forget your tents...Take the little house!!:):)

We wanted somthing light and small. Some of the places we go have very narrow crappy roads going into them. Others are just very far away.. As in 5+ hours one way. For us to make that drive for just a weekend trip I wanted something small. My truck is rated for 11k Towing, But for the trips we take I didnt' even want to stick the 80% rule. With that 6x14, I forget its back there half the time.. I can pull through drive through windows and it only takes up 2 spots in a parking lot. I learned to drive pulling trailers. But I really just dont like pully 8ft wide trailers on 2 lane back roads. I can and will, just rather not. My sister has a 28 foot work and play they pull with a F350.. They pretty much need a truck stop if they want to stop to eat, ect. Its a nice setup you just better make sure you have plenty of room where ever you go.
Besides my wife is pretty tough.. She really didn't even care if I put a bathroom in it. She was happy to not have to mess with a tent. But she will be the first to tell you she can just use the woods for a bathroom and river for a bath. That said she really likes the trailer now.

Its wired just like a typical RV would be. Except for the fact that I used 12g wire on everything. A lot of RVs use 16g for a lot of the wiring. It has a 110v plug on the outside. When you plug shore power in, it powers the convert which charges the battery and runs all the 12v stuff.. Un plug the shore power and everything in the trailer runs off the onboard deep cycle battery. Minus the AC and the 110 outlet of course they need 110v to work. The plug is just 20amp. My AC only pulls 9 amps and the converter doesn't pull much at all. I also tried to keep the power load small since I use a EU2000i Honda generator.. I like it cause its quiet and only weights 50Lbs I had the generator before the trailer. So built the trailer with that generator in mind also

I have a 24' enclosed with two sets of bunk beds that fold down from the wall. I believe, without looking cuz im at work, the brand of the beds is "blazin beltech" or something of that nature. I am 6'5'' and they fit me great. Add some cabinets to the front with a fridge etc and that is all you really need. Id love to sell you mine, but i still use/need it quite a bit...

I have a 24' X 8 '1/2'cargo craft "vector" v-nose, roof air, ramp rear w/ rv door and bug screen, e-track, cabinets and shelves up in the nose, 12 volt and 110, I boughht 3 of the sofas/ beds that when not in use fold up against the wall.
besides the a/c it has one roof vent and the window in the rv door, I'll be adding two more screened windows shortly.I went with the 8 1/2' because I can put the jeep, sandcar whatever in it.
I payed 6500 for the trailer (used) and added the three sofa/beds(used) at $200 each and I added an awning. less than 7500 for the whole rig and like it much more than my past rvs/fifth wheels.

Cool guys, thanks for all the ideas. I got my quote back from Millenium Trailers yesterday. 24' w/5K# axles, air/heat. Small kitchen, fridge, stove, etc. Shower/crapper. Nothing fancy, no beds, no nothing in the back. $20K. That is way more than I have to spend on this venture. As was stated before my fiancee is a river bath, crap in the woods type chic. Later on I can add that stuff if need be. What kinda enclosed trailers are the best ones to start with. Must have 82" at the MINIMUM between the fenders, 7' tall inside and 24' at the shortest. Also need at least 5K axles under it. So basically tall/wide and heavy duty.

Yeah premade trailers are pretty expensive. When you say min 24' is that over all trailer or garage space? Larger trailers are a little easier to find on the used market.. Might want to keep an eye out. Since a lot of people are cutting back between the economy and gas prices.
You can buy just a cargo trailer that size for around 6-8k.

So far I've painted the walls (white BIN) & floor (rhino liner) and mounted a 9500# recovery winch in the nose. Now I need to do some wiring but I'm not sure what to use for the 120V runs. Staple Romex under the floor & run up through holes to outlets or use flexible stranded wire like THHN? With the wall cavities only 1" deep I'm not sure what I can fit.

#27 ·
If you run Romex under the floor you need to put it into conduit. Inside the wall it doesn't have to be. If it were me id use metal clad or armored wire like used in commercial buildings. Wouldn't need conduit and its pretty tough stuff. I would make sure to put any connections inside the trailer. Any big box store sells 12/2 metal clad wire.

Right, Your shore power connects to that 20amp plug, from there I have 12/2 Romex that runs to the converter box, Converter box has 3 110ac breakers. One powers the converter itself, One powers the AC and the other powers the 110 outlet. Converter has a 20 amp breaker the other two are 15amp. The converter also has several 12v fuses. These power everything else like the lights, radio, fantastic fan, hot water heater and water pump. The converter is either a 20 or 25 amp. Its plenty to run everything in the trailer. I might have 15amps worth of 12v stuff if everything was running at once.
I don't have a inverter in the trailer so the 110 outlet only works if you are plugged in to shore power. I thought about wiring one in so the 110 outlet would work off the battery when not plugged in. But really we pretty much never need it. All our chargers are 12v so I use the 12v plug more then anything.

No, looking for about 24' overall. I did notice that the LONG trailers are freakin cheap right now but my truck is a 07 Dodge 2500 4x4 quad cab Cummins. That would prolly be OK but the 6" lift and 37's are gonna limit me. Its crazy the price fluctuation on these enclosed trailers. I mean you got one 24' for $7-8K sitting next to one that looks identical (same brand) for $14K. I know whether or not there finished out on the inside is a big price difference.

What is the best thing to finish the inside out with? Talking insulation and wall covering here. Foam board insulation? And how bout this stuff to do that walls in PolyWall from Parkland Plastics - 800-835-4110 - Mold-resistant, waterproof panels made from recycled plastic in the USA

Its like the plastic looking walls that you see in like HD, Walmart, etc. Just rivet the stuff to the walls with rivets and it should be perfect I would think. Doesnt scratch easily doesnt mildew....sounds perfect. I think this stuff would follow the bows in the trailer ceiling too.

#34 ·
The plastic looking stuff you seen in public bathrooms and kitchens is called FRP, it stands for Fiber Reinforced Plastic. Thats whats in my bathroom in the trailer and what covers the bottom 2 feet of the garage walls. I also used PVC trim and silicone to seal all the seams.. So I can spray mine out with a water hose when we get home.

Waiting on a quote for a 24' Pace Ralley 102" wide/7' tall. Complete with vinyl walls and roof and both insulated. Also 30 amp electrical package. Gonna leave the floor bare and either do epoxy with sand/linoleum tile (prolly not) or spray in bedliner. Ive found some good deals online but there either 6'6" tall or they have 3500# axles under it or they are WAY too long for my needs.

Anybody ever dealt with a Cargo Craft trailer? Found a pretty good deal on one today that fits the needs but not sure how good they are. They guy told me they were as good as Pace but you know how that goes....LOL!

I just sold my 18' atv hauler and picked up a 24' enclosed trailer. I am going to insulate it and wire it this winter then add a cabinet in the front, tv and air conditioning and just use a large air mattress for now.
