2 Rzrs:light, shortest toy hauler, or truck w/camper?

Hi,
my husband and I have a Rzr each, presently hauling on a trailer, with a deisel H1. we'd like to do more overnight trips, here in Alaska and have some indoor comfort, and maybe bring friends too. we've talked about driving down the highway buggies in tow, to the sun in in the Lower 48 states during the ridiculously looonnngg cold dark Alaska winter.
for cost (gas) and contemporary comfort, what's everyone's opinion on the the toy hauler versus truck with truck camper choice?
we've thought of buying a truck and camper next year, when the hybrid 2009 Silverado is available. but we've seen some bada*s toy haulers: light, compact, really well thought out.
convenience, cost, comfort, shortest, lightest toy hauler, best made camper...?
your experiences?
thanks,
akcol.

Re: 2 Rzrs:light, shortest toy hauler, or truck w/camper?

your question is right up my alley!! I have owned a 2002 Artic Fox 1140 Truck camper for 6 years now, and LOVED it! last year I purchased a Haulmark 8x24 enclosed trailer to put behind the truck/camper. This combo worked great for hauling lots of toys. just a couple examples.. one trip I hauled my 1946 willys jeep + my RZR + 5 days firewood, another trip I hauled my RZR + 5 dirt bikes + riding gear bags for 5 people. Even though this camper was one of largest units Artic Fox made at the time (with a slide out) My wife and I (no kids) grew tired of the small living space. So Just this week, we purchased a 2009 Cyclone 3950 Toy Hauler (40 foot). So now we have enormus living space, 4 queen + 2 twin beds, sleeps 10 comfortably, but can only haul ONE rzr + a couple quads or bikes, and thats it.

Re: 2 Rzrs:light, shortest toy hauler, or truck w/camper?

course I can't remember the specific toy haulers I found that had a 21' length, total with space (by inches) for the 2 Rzrs, with the main bed, and guest beds, all being fold up or downs. The layout was contemporary, thoughtful, bad-ass...just not with the separate living/bedroom layout.
I'm thinking by this time next year we'll have CHOICES, since the market demands the most bang for our gas buck more than ever before.
Sounds like you are enjoying the increased space. Was it hard to make a switch to a bigger footprint to overall to haul, drive, manuveur (making corners, lane changes, parking spaces...)
thanks!

Re: 2 Rzrs:light, shortest toy hauler, or truck w/camper?

I suppose you have to wigh your own needs, but here's my $0.02....
Toyhauler all-the-way! Benefits include; have a street legal vehicle to explore the paved areas you stop at, more haul room, more living room when you remove your toys/stuff, etc... I have done it both ways, matter of fact I still do at times. I prefer the toy hauler set-up by far. The manufacturers today offer so many choices that there is one out there just for you. Okay, I sound like a RV sales person now... I'm done.

Hope this helps,
Nick

Re: 2 Rzrs:light, shortest toy hauler, or truck w/camper?

I would have to agree with M6815N. Having my tow vehicle for running around once trailer is unhooked is great! Having 10x Living space/storage over my truck camper is also great! I looked at 50+ toy hauler layouts before choosing this one, and that was just local. And from what I found on the internet, there were hundreds of other layouts to choose from. I am very happy with the 5th wheel toy hauler, and will be selling my truck camper. However I will miss the versatility of being able to tow anything (i.e. boat, flat trailer, enclosed trailer, another camper, etc) WHILE having my camper on the truck. Also the Weight of the 5th wheel is MUCH more then truck camper/enclosed trailer combined, by about 4-5k. Now to reply to your previous post.....

Footprint is about the same.. truck w/ camper on = 25', enclosed trailer w/ extended tounge = 29'. Total = 54'...... truck alone = 21', 5th wheel toy hauler = 40' but is hitched in middle of truck bed, so subtract about 6'. Total = 55'

Driveability... hands down, 5th wheel. Much more control/stability and much better braking ability

Manuverability... hard to answer this one because I only have 1 trip with my 5th wheel now and no other previous experience, but it does seem like i have to swing my turns much wider with the 5th wheel. Mabey I'm just not used to it yet. lane changes are easy. I just give plenty of turn signal warning and plenty of space for the trailer to clear.

Parking spaces... Ha! forget it! park in the booneys and walk! that was true for my truck camper/enclosed trailer also.

here is the only pic I have so far of my new 5th wheel. was taken at the dealership with my camera phone.....

Re: 2 Rzrs:light, shortest toy hauler, or truck w/camper?

if you have 2 rzr your going to need at least 20 feet of cargo space which limits trailer size look at the 26' + Attuide trailers or Ragin trailers both make really good trailers imo . Hope this helps

Re: 2 Rzrs:light, shortest toy hauler, or truck w/camper?

I am really interested in this topic because this time next year I will be coming home and getting a second Rzr. I have one now, that I bought before I left. I have done some research, but it is difficult to find a trailer that will hold two Rzr's. One of the options I came up with was expensive. It was a class C motorhome that was a toy hauler and had the room, but the cost was right around 100 grand. I saw a few trailers that met my needs, but most of them were pushing my gross weight. I have an 04 Avalanche 2500 that can tow 12,000 pounds gross, but I don't want to tow more than 11,000. As well, when you do the math after you have two Rzr'z in the trailer and it fully loaded with water and on board fuel and everything it doesn't leave much room to pack anything else. Its great when they say they have a 125 gallon fresh water tank and 48 gallon on board gas for your toys, but thats what 1384 pounds of liquids. Not to mention the weight of the Rzrs at 2000 pounds for them both. Thats a grand total of 3384 pounds and some max out at 4000 pounds of carrying capacity. So, I am still looking.

I agree go diesel if you can. I personally like my class a RV. we pull a 20 ft inclosed trailer with all the toys behind the RV. We also have a large family so its easier for us. nobody has to ride in the fifth wheel anymore.

Re: 2 Rzrs:light, shortest toy hauler, or truck w/camper?

I know, I know... Avalanche hehe... I used to think the same thing about this truck before I bought it. This truck has done nothing, but impress me since the day I bought it. The only trouble this truck has given me are all cosmetic issues. Like I was saying before this truck is a 2500 HD. It is not the heavy half. It has an 8.1L (496 CID) motor, a 4L85E transmission, 14 bolt FF rear axle. Granted it is not a 1 ton and/or a diesel, but at the time I bought my truck Allison trannies were plagued with problems and I never heard anything good about a powerstroke. I have never owned a Dodge family vehicle before, so I wouldn't have gone that route. Also when I was looking for a truck (brand new) the cost of a diesel on average was 5000-6000 more for the same truck. Back when diesel was cheaper than gas I still wouldn't have got the cost savings back from buying a diesel in the amount of time it would take to pay it off. And the last two years diesel hasn't been cheaper than gas and I have been saving.

So I am just trying to find something that will suit my needs and then take it from there. Like I said I still have a year maybe more before I really need to make a decision. And by then I may be shopping for a replacement truck. These newer Avalanches haven't impressed me because they don't offer the 2500 anymore and if they did it would be nothing but a dog like the 2500 Suburban (heavy half) they just came out with. Well this got a little long winded. I apologize.

Re: 2 Rzrs:light, shortest toy hauler, or truck w/camper?

you might be able to find one with a 15-20ft garage and stack them, or one flat and one on a 45', is your truck geared?
