shock compatibility ???

I am wondering what the spring tension is on the front and rear of my RZR.Also how much static weight on each shock. What im looking to do is possibly us shocks from other power toys...ie snowmobile, with better valving and or reseviors on them.If someone has attempted this or has any info let me know.I would like to get a set of Elka's but the army pay isnt all that good.

Re: shock compatibility (stock shock info)

I can just copy/paste what I already put up on PRC:

Here's some measurements I made on the stock Rzr shocks:

FRONT Polaris No: 814902001182 Mfr: Sachs/Mexico

Length eye-to-eye: 16.25"
Bushing: 13/32 (10mm) ID, 5/8 OD, 1 3/16 long
Spring preload (lowest setting): 220 Lbs.
Spring Rate: 100 Lbs per Inch
Spring Free Length: 12.375", 6.5 free coils, Installed Length: 10.25"
Preload adjuster range: .625"

REAR Polaris No: 814902001183 Mfr: Sachs/Mexico

Length eye-to-eye: 18.5"
Bushing: 13/32 (10mm) ID, 5/8 OD, 1 3/16 long
Spring preload (lowest setting): 220 Lbs.
Spring Rate: 170 Lbs per Inch
Spring Free Length: 13.5", 8.5 free coils, Installed Length: 12.125"
Preload adjuster range: .625"

Notes:

Gas charge: None (no force exerted by shock body)
Valving: I can't measure this except by "feel"...Compression = very soft, Rebound = Medium soft.

My setup:

A home made shock press with loadcell & display. Tape measure & pointer.

This should be enough info to help you find some ATV or sled shocks that fit. In my experience though, ATV & sled springs are way too weak for the Rzr. Figure on spending another $80 or so per pair for stiffer springs. See ya on eBay!!

Re: shock compatibility ???

WOW your the man!!! thanks alot, this is all of the info that i was looking 4.I was looking at some rear shocks from a sled or a atv...but the spring rate is so low on them.Im sure I can find the length and OD, but the RZR is so heavy It would just destroy a stocker I think.Any recomendations?
By the way i see the cables and canon plug that your using in the picture, was It from a RADS kit.

Re: shock compatibility ???

What is RADS? I work in product testing and can get ahold of just about anything to push-pull-measure or break stuff :-) That's just some dusty old junk form work that won't be missed. LOL

Re: shock compatibility ???

BTW it's not hard to find 16 1/2" and 18 1/2" shocks on eBay. The better ones (gas charged, rebuildable, not abused) cost too much to experiment with. I usually have a few select sets in my "watch" list but they usually exceed what I'm willing to pay. If I was following someone elses lead I'd spend more knowing it was already tested. I've been down this road before on trail buggies and it gets expensive being the leader.

Re: shock compatibility ???

I've just started looking into this myself so I can't recommend anything. I wish I could use the DS650 shocks I have. They're great quality but are 19 1/2" long so won't fit.

Are you looking to end up with shocks with reservoirs? I don't do much sustained high speed whoop taming so I'm not looking for rezzies. The shocks in the picture are from my trail buggy experiments. I had some great success there for little money. I'm hoping to repeat this with the Rzr.

Those Arctic Cat shocks are 18" long and are a pretty nice shock. With a set of 180 Lbs. springs these might work OK in the rear--but would be better if they were a tiny bit longer. I might try the DS650 shocks since I already have 'em. I could use limit straps if the extra length causes CV joint bind.

Re: shock compatibility ???

Im like you on this one, I just want a better ride and not too much sag that will not cost me a pocket full.I think the DS shocks are a good bet.and I have limit straps for some of my jeep builds. there are alot of shocks avalible for the honda 450r,and the polaris preditor. I am gonna put my machine on scales this weekend and see what I get on all 4 corners. by the way are the eyes the same size on those DS shocks?
