Got the LT installed and ran it hard through the whoops locally with no problems so thought I was good to go for Glamis. Got about 200 yards out of camp on first ride ... hit the first jump I found and got maybe 2ft air and 10ft length and on the landing went sideways ... barely saved it as was on a down hill landing ... knew it was not good. Only one rear wheel had power ... passenger rear axle was loose (could move it around with my hand easily). Limped back to camp in AWD and bailed from the dunes that day and took it apart last night. Here is what happened to the CV cage:
Broken CV cage:
Some chips/grooves in CV housing as well as some extreme heat/burn marks:
Dont really know what happened/root cause but with the heat marks I assume something was up from the beginning after install and eventually it binded and tore everything up. I guess it might have been possible that the axle just popped out of the CV but circlip was fine, etc. and these inner CVs gave us the least amount of problems/least bashing required on install so it could have just flat out failed.
I already kinda wanted a LT kit with complete Gorilla axle/CVs from the beiginning of my LT reasearch but as most state it really should not be necessary. They are much beefier in terms of axle and CVs, have more angle for the CVs to travel, and both ends of the axles plunge making it a true floating axle setup like you would see on sand rails. So, bit the bullet and just upgraded to the +6 Gorillas as I also damaged a couple other parts during install and had lingering concerns about them too.
Here is a comparison of rear Gorilla, to Stock with +6 axle in the CVs, to stock axle:
CV Comparison:
This obviously had nothing to do with the UTV Crap LT kit ... just more of my bad luck basically. But, again, Johnny of UTV Crap supported me in troubleshooting this and even offering up to drive me an axle out to the dunes and go through my install to see if anything else might not look right ... top notch people as usual. Just went with the Gorillas even though it was likely not necessary at all but gives me piece of mind with all the experiences I have had so far on this install.
