5 Point Simpson Harness installed

Hi Guys,

I decided that I wanted a 5 point harness for safety as well as comfort. Here is what I decided on. They are Simpson part number 29108BK (BK is the color code). As shown they are a perfect fit, except the submarine strap is too long. It's easily trimmed or tucked under the seat. No other length adjustments are required.

At first I didn't want a 3 inch shoulder strap, thinking a 2 inch would be a better fit around the seat back, but these work well and are very comfortable when the going gets bumpy.

As far as the mounting goes:

The lap belt bolts to the stock location.

The sub strap was looped around the bar that holds the front of the seats down. The bar is pretty thin, but I was too lazy to fabricate a decent mount.

The shoulder belts were mounted to the bar behind the seats. There are 2 bolts behind each seat, the inboard one is close to the seat center line. The stock bolt is a grade 8, 5/16inch by 2 inch. What you will need is :

2 each grade 8, 5/16 inch by 3 inch bolts
2 each grade 8, 5/16 inch washers
2 each steel sleeve spacers 1/2 OD by 3/8 ID, 1 inch long

All are available from the Ace hardware store. In this way the bolt can be torqued down tight without pinching the straps. The spacer could be shortened about 1/4 inch for a better installation, but again I was lazy. Probably not sufficient for NASCAR but good enough for me.

If you go this route be sure to pass the shoulder belts over the roll cage cross member before going forward to your shoulders. If not, in a frontal crash the belts will compress your spine as you pitch forward. Not a good thing!

Re: 5 Point Simpson Harness installed

Hi,

I was curious, too. So, I timed myself. Standing next to the RZR it takes about 10 seconds to climb in, sit down and fasten the stock belt. With the 5 point, it takes 25 to 30 seconds without rushing.

This does not included the time to fasten the net. Or to undo the shoulder straps so you can fasten the net when you forget! LOL

If you are racing with your buddies this too too long, but if you are upside down and did not fall out, it is time well spent!
