I have searched and haven't found an answer. 16 turbo is way cheaper than a 17. I know the 17 has some upgrades, but is it really worth all the extra coin? Are the 16s really over heating with the new flash? The recalls seem to address the issues like clutch etc.
How much is way cheaper? With an oil cooler, the 17 front grill, and a aftermarket tune it will not over heat. A new muffler without a cat also helps reduce heat, or remove the cat from stock muffler. I'd say less than $2,000 to get it there and that's using off the self parts.
Honestly, after the updates i have had zero issues. I'm not sure that a 17 grill is required. Ive run this car pretty hard and never saw over 206 degrees. A tune would certainly help to keep it cool if thats still a concern and in the power department to bring it up to 2017 standards, although i don't feel my 2016 is lacking for grunt. i'm not sure if the lack of power and throttle limitation in low gear is a 2016 only deal, but again a tune would solve that. the 17 will have better resale down the road, but these things are a terrible investment to begin with. i'd be more inclined to save the coin up front and deal with that later. Any turbo should be relevant for quite a while and still hold some value. if you're saving thousands, which you prob are, i'd go 16.
If I knew what I know and were buying a new one now I would go for a 2016 to save the money and put that towards accessories. My 2016 has been 100% trouble free.
Thanks for or the replies. I did find 2 brand new turbos in the west coast for a stupid good deal so it was dumb not to buy one. All updates done from the dealer and I was able to use my 1000 voucher. They did the clutch and fan tsb and recalls. Time to swap parts I guess
My 16 has been great also. I was in the same place as you last July. By 16 or wait and see what 17 brings. I'm glad a got a 16. Saved a bunch of money up front. Through a tune and exhaust on and have more power than a stock 17 and no issues so far. I'm a little over 1000 miles.
