New turbo problems

I drove 2200 miles to Abernathys to buy a new turbo. My 6th purchase from them, and up till this one, it has been great.

The salesman loaded it on my trailer, so my first time driving it was when I got home and went to unload it. It was almost impossible to get in reverse and after backing it off, it won't go in any gear without turning it off. To stop it, you have to turn off the key as the clutch won't disengage.

Abernathys tells me take it to a dealer here as it was fine when they drove it. It has 1.7 miles on it. No way did it not do it when they drove it. I'm hard pressed to believe it just developed a problem while being trailered home.

Normally I wouldn't care, but I spoke to a friend who works at the dealer closest to me, and he said I could expect a three week to three month wait before I'd get it back. Expensive paperweight.

I did that. I have a brand new four seat 2017 turbo in the shop that we're building for the Baja 10000, so I have another clutch. Polaris evidently uses different spacers on the secondary clutch as the four seater has a spacer that is twice as wide. We measured the output shaft and the four seater is 1/8 inch longer, thus the wider spacer. I don't want to steal parts off of a car that has two miles on it to fix one that has 1.7 miles.

I asked Abernathy to just send me a new clutch and I'd change it myself, but they can't. I understand that I have to take it to a dealer to get new parts. What frustrates me, is it should have never been sold like that.

Re: New turbo problems

Ok, I took everything off and the bearing on the primary is totally seized and won't turn. I'm going to put on the one off the 4 seater to make sure that's it, and I'll post up shortly.

Re: New turbo problems

Different primary fixed it. The bearing is seized so bad, we can't get it to turn. No way it wasn't like that when it was put on.

Other than a bit of time, and a new clutch, I'm good to go. I have a complete shop and work on these things all day long. What about the average buyer that wouldn't have access to another clutch or the knowledge to work thru the problem?

I'm going to take the clutch to a local dealer and see if I can get it replaced without being out of the RZR for weeks. If not, I'll just order the parts and fix it myself.

Re: New turbo problems

The service manager from Abernathys just called, and they are going to send me the parts to fix it.

I realize when the dealer is 1100 miles away, they are limited, so I'm very pleased with what they are doing.

Exactly why I don't.

Local dealers would have told me:
A. There's nothing wrong
B. It's my fault
Or C. They can't get Polaris to cover it.

I would have had to wait weeks or months to get one if those answers.

Instead, Abernathys stepped up and is taking care of me. Was I frustrated, yeah , but they worked hard to make a long time customer happy.

Re: New turbo problems

I got my 2017 XP Turbo about six weeks ago. The shifter got to where it would not shift from park or any position while idling. It drove fine except for shifting at idle. This is after the first two hour ride. Turned enging off no problem shifting. Took it back to the dealer and it was a siezed clutch bearing only used at idle. It was covered under warranty. The mechanic said my clutch was also siezed onto the crankshaft and damaged the treads removing it.
