Anyone convert to two wheel drive on their XP 900?

My buddy and I ride only the dunes. I blew out the front axle bearing and knuckle, so I removed the axle on the driver's side and rode like a bat outta hell for the rest of the day(2 wheel drive only as that's how I drive most of the time.)Thinking this might be a good idea, He removed the driveline to his front diff. So what feedback or recommendations do you have? Basically I am asking if anyone else has done this and if so what, if any secrets do you want to share?

I hear ya....but with the OMF rims offset my wheelbase is close to 70" now. Not going to do too many tree trails with this set up.

I often think of this idea, my .02, you would reduce rotatiing mass, weight, which in turn would give you more power to the rear wheels. Now on the other hand, out of the hole performance could be hurt????? just my .02, but I think when I get my 12, since I dune only, I will be removing all of the front end parts and running just rear wheels only with a turbo....dune buggies do it...

good luck

Re: Anyone convert to two wheel drive on their XP 900?

I think dune buggies have less % of weight on the front wheels. Mine isn't an XP, but I have plenty of hp and I still like AWD for better steering, climbing, and traction when going slow and out of the hole.

but do you "need" AWD in the open dunes? probably not. so it would be a preference thing.
the redlines dont have awd in either the single seat or the side x side.

if you prefer driving around in 2wd and never turn on the Awd then take out the parts you never use and save the weight and rotating mass.

you could always put them back in if you don't like it.

My buddy and I just left St. Anthony's and he had taken out everythingfrom the drive shaft forward. He pulled well and never got stuck. I will post some video. It was my idea, now I'm keeping my gear. I will post video soon.

how are you keeping the front hubs together? the axle stub and nut is what keeps the hub and bearing together.

I would like to remove my front drive also. I mainly only ride in the sand and never use 4wd. Im sure it is eating power and just is extra weight.

Re: Anyone convert to two wheel drive on their XP 900?

I seen a thread with someone who did this same thing. He took out the drive shaft, front diff, and left in the outboard CV's to hold the hubs together.

Re: Anyone convert to two wheel drive on their XP 900?

Yep, been doing this for a few years now. Did it on my '08 stock engine for a long time and now both my street bike conversions have this too and love it. If I had an XP I would do it also if dedicated it to the dunes. Buy some CV's from eBay ... the ones I bought didnt have the cage or balls installed yet so just have someone grind down the housing for even more weight reduction so you are left with just a stub axle.

Re: Anyone convert to two wheel drive on their XP 900?

went ahead and did it on the Xp I just got, still using the stock tires and not a problem yet, flies great, no nose dive on big jumps, lighten the front end, kinda fun, added a little fun to the package, can wait for the sand tires front and rear, then turbo...
