Wrench AIR intake Modification, repost from engine

Take this for what its worth, In other words try it yourself and you will believe what I say. The "resonator" box is restrictive on the intake side (up near the side intake point. Once the air enters the plenum it "S" curves back and forth a few times..... At that point the overall opening is much smaller than the intake rubber hose going into the cover of the air filter assembly. So what! you ask Ok stay with me, there is a little opening at the bottom of the plenum used to drain water if it were to get injested... BUT in your application its a perfect place to pull in sand to the front side of the filter........and the back side if you have not greased the lip of the air filter... HERE IS THE TEST. remove the rubber cover (duckbill) and place a fuel line 3/8 I believe over the barb sticking down.... Start your rig, Quick press the gas pedal and you will feel air get pulled into the hose...... I go further to say I ran that 3/8 hose down and drilled a hole behind the drivers seat pushed the hose thru to allow the hose to pull "clean" air not in the sand spray..... Just lately I also added a Supplmental 1 1/2 hose (plastic wet dry vacuum hose) into the plenum area to "bypass the restriction of the aformentioned "S" bend section of the intake ran it behind the drivers seat and well IT PULLS ALOT of air. Which supprised me... it means that the 900 is breathing thru a straw.. If this dosent make sence ask me some questions... I do believe this is a fix everyone should do... AT LEAST the 3/8 Hose (if your a sand dunes guy), If you want free power use the 1 1/2 hose idea too... Hooty

Re: AIR intake Modification, repost from engine

I'm thinkin' that all of the busy work inside the "resonator" box redirecting the air flow around curves is for the purpose of noise canceling. However, a lot of noise still gets out of there. Wonder what it would sound like if the air box was straight through?

Noise sux.

Re: AIR intake Modification, repost from engine

The engine is going to draw air from the easist place it can. Its about pressure drop, so if you take off the duckbill, then you will have air being drawn thru there. Not sure what else you are doing. Are you adding a place to draw air instead of the side openings with teh shop vac hose?

Nothing to do with this idea..but on the subject of intake noise I can tell you that with the airbox lid off the 900 intake noise is VERY loud at WOT...you cant even begin to hear the stock exhaust over it lol.

Re: AIR intake Modification, repost from engine

OK, posted a picture.... both the duckbill bypass and the supplemental intake hose go thru the plastic behind the drivers seat and end.. a relative clean intake point, the oem side intake still functional.

Re: AIR intake Modification, repost from engine

Cool idea...What kind of negative pressure does the stock set up pull? I assume you did test at least the stock resonator restriction and have some data such as pressure drop?

edit...Happy XP900 in Ok? LOL..
Actually I'm not saying he is wrong at all..just wondering it if he is right and has done any testing to back it

Re: AIR intake Modification, repost from engine

I used the equation ε/D. NRe = Dvρ/μ to check pre and post reads. AHH NO I put my finger / hand next to the hose opening and felt the suction when stabbing the throttle quickly, slow throttle motions will never reveal any problems in polaris design. You had your fun. so did I. But I suggest you try the MOD your will agree it should help to some degree.

Take the airbox lid off and put your hand over the throttle bodies..feel air being sucked in? What do we do about that restiction?
Just kidding..not doubting the stock box is a restriction..and not suprised.. just asking..people might want to know more before they go cutting holes in parts..

Re: AIR intake Modification, repost from engine

I know, thats the best I can do for Data, Just to ease everyones mind the resonator is $43.00 new. I checked that before I cut into mine.. But no regrets yet, I am still worried on being lean at sea level. Nate at ALBA says I should be ok but I have been told that before as I was walking back to camp with broken junk. SO this idea is still needing testing I will be going to Glamis halloween. that will be go or no go. Or stock or buying a big bore kit when I roach the top end.

I like the idea just have doubts that is is worth the trouble...probably sounds faster though with the noise from the hose behind the seat though..
If you suspect the AFR why not spend a few bucks on a Wideband now if you plan on upgrading "if it breaks"?..it will serve you well if you want to mod..I think you'll be fine and can trust Nate's advice....N/A it is pretty hard to lean any of thing out to the point of melt down with the stock filter in place..
