2017 XP1K Timing Chain Tensioner - I Think Polaris Fixed It!

Ok, so I'm coming to a 2017 XP1K from a 2016 900S. I had the timing chain startup knock on my 900S and put in an aftermarket timing chain tensioner to fix it.

I haven't noticed the knock on my 1K - yet - but I was just browsing the Polaris parts fiche today and noticed on the fiche that they're displaying a tensioner that looks like the aftermarket auto-ratcheting tensioners as opposed to the one that I've got in my machine. Mine physically looks the same as the one I had in the 900S, but that doesn't mean anything from external appearance.

It made me look at the part numbers for the various models and years and I found something interesting:

2017 XP 1000 Timing Chain Tensioner pn - 3023143
2016 XP 1000 Timing Chain Tensioner pn - 3022152 (also used on 2016 900S)

I also noticed that Polaris is listing the new part as "3023143 TENSIONER-RATCHETING,MECH" which would indicate it's an auto-ratcheting tensioner.

Kudos to Polaris if they've truly fixed the issue and listened to consumer feedback.

UPDATE 12/21/16: here's a good picture comparison to see the difference. Old style on the left and new style on the right.

Interesting. I wonder if it's backwards compatible (prior years), and if it is - would it void the Polaris warranty if there was an issue? Might be worth the piece of mind to install theirs, so there's no warranty hassles?

I've been doing some additional investigation into this and I can't find a 100% confirmed answer, but I think I now know more than what I initially knew.

The parts fiche pn 3023143 for the new style auto-ratcheting tensioner is what displays on the graphic and we've established that. I've still got one that looks like the old style tensioners and now I'm lead to believe that I have a hydraulic one still :(. I don't think they'll be backwards-compatible because the cylinder casting is supposedly different on the models that have the new style.

The new style castings apparently have threaded holes for the two cap screws that secure the ratcheting tensioner to the motor.

So I'll likely end up with another OSP tensioner and go the manual tensioner route this time since it's cheaper.

Excellent question. I'm not aware of anything at the moment aside from the 2016 to 2017 changes that I can list off the top of my head:

- No a-arm grease fittings
- Progressive rate front springs on 2-seater 2017 models
- 2017s now have an accessory key position
- Rear shock reservoirs aren't mounted on the rear cage extensions. They're on the shock itself now.
- Seatbelts have the neck-saver adjustment on the shoulder area.
- Voltage regulator on 2017s is relocated in front of the radiator.

They've moved to UHMW bushings that are supposed to be self-lubricating and low/no-maintenance. I'm interested to see how long they last.

I'll be ordering ORB lower a-arms on the Christmas sale this week and swapping bushings over to the new arms. I'll obviously have to cap the holes with fittings, but I'm assuming they'll fit significantly tighter than older style bushings so I'll give them a little coat of anti-seize before they go in.
