Popping, Backfiring, Stalling, and Not Starting

I'm looking for some help/advice with my 2010 RZR S. It started popping/backfiring when I would let off the gas, mostly on a downhill a few months ago. The problem has gotten progresively worse and now it runs like garbage pretty much all the time. The latest problem is that it stalls when you let off the gas. This weekend after it stalled it wouldn't start. Turn the key, nothing, take it out wait a second and try it again, finally got it to fire back up. We have taken it to the dealership and the repairs should be covered by our warranty since it is only 5 months old and has 250 miles on it. Of course they can't find a problem! It has ruined two of our trips, because it is practically inoperable. My question is could this be something electrical? Also, the check engine light comes on all the time, so shouldn't the dealership be able to see some kind of code related to the issue?

I am going to be pissed if I spent 15K on a toy that is in the shop more than out on the trails!

you can check for "blink codes".
check the owners manual or service manual for the codes.
my signature has free downloads that might help you.

Re: Popping, Backfiring, Stalling, and Not Starting

Along with the electrical, check your fuel system. Is it getting fuel? The backfire thing sounds like a lean condition maybe from starving for fuel? Just throwing some stuff out there. Can you check some things yourself or are you depending on the dealer alone (one reason I'm not getting an extended warranty when I PICK MINE UP THIS FRIDAY!)?

Didn't someone have a problem with one of the sparkplug caps coming loose and causing a problem?

Make sure you post the solution when you find out what the problem is.

dude same thing happened on my 2010 rzr-s. took it out ran fine then it started to backfire when letting off the gas. stalling, wouldnt run past half throttle. took it to the dealer 2 times. finally checked forums and found the throttle position sensor is out of adjustment. it needs to be set with a volt meter at a correct throttle opening. now after the reapair i have put on 200 miles without a single backfire, stall, problem.

Sounds definintely lean to me. Have you checked all of your intake boots for a tight seal?

Might want to look at the fuel pump too.

Yes, I had to replace the pump in mine too. Mine would start acting up when it got warm and ran hard. It was a cheap and quick replacement. There is an Intex part number here somewhere.

Holy crud, my RZR S (purple power) just went into the shop today! It smelled like it was burning up. The tech said that it smelled electrical!

But in your case, I'd get your timing checked, your gap in the plugs...and make sure that your using 91 octane.

Let me know what you've found...hopefully it will be a simple fix.

I second the TPS sensor as mine has been in the shop 4 times for it. There is a four to five page check that a dealer has to do just to check it. Most of the time if it is bad the throttle body needs to be replaced also. After 2 years of issues they just replaced the wiring harness and so far it has run good. Some dealers will tell they just did a adjustment (or just turned the screw) but there is alot more to the adjustment process than that so ask what they did. If it is out or bad it will give the impression of haveing bad gas in the machine. Good luck.

Re: Popping, Backfiring, Stalling, and Not Starting

It is back at the dealer as of today. At this point I have told them I am not taking it back until it is fixed. I didn't spend 15k for a toy that doesn't run half the time. They have checked the throttle position sensor, which was originally what they assumed was the problem, but that didn't fix it. The loose ignition wire seems to make the most sense because it runs fine until the trail gets rough. This is also why the dealer can't duplicate the problem. They can only take it for a spin around the block. I will keep you all posted on what they finally find/fix. I'm not happy with the "we don't know what the problem is" excuse they keep giving me. I have several videos documenting how crappy it runs sometimes.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Popping, Backfiring, Stalling, and Not Starting

Mine is running right so far after two years of the same thing. I pushed the dealer to replace the wiring harness and so far it was the fix. They checked the voltage to the TPS and it was only getting the voltage some of the time, half voltage some times, and no voltage some times. They said the only voltage it was getting was from the map sensor. This meant that the machine know it was getting fuel but it just did not know how much. In turn the TPS did not know how to regulate it as it was suppose to. New complete wiring harness has so far done the trick for the same problem for me. The dealer that I bought it from wouldn't try to fix it so this whole time it has been a different dealer working to fix my problem. The dealer I bought it from kept trying to accuse me of doing things to the machine to have the problems. They even was asking the people I ride with what I was doing to it for it to have all the problems. Good luck.

You sound pretty frustrated. Before the 6 month warranty is up, you might want to call a lemon law attorney, and get some legal advice. Not sure, but I think the federal lemon laws apply to ATV's also. You may be able to get a refund or replacement, if they can't fix it.

Re: Popping, Backfiring, Stalling, and Not Starting

I called the dealer today and asked them to check the wire harness at the ignition switch, which is what others have mentioned on this and other threads. There seems to be a common electrical problem with the 2010 S??? I am picking it up tomorrow regardless of if they actually fix it or not since we have a trip planned this weekend. I am hoping that now that I have it narrowed down I can even fix it myself. If not I have an appointment at a different dealer on Tuesday.

Hoopers2 the Lemon Law thing has crossed my mind. Honestly at this point I think it is an easy fix, but the dealership seems to be run by a bunch of morons. A lady in service today had the nerve to tell me her "technician" hadn't gotten to my machine in the past week because they are swamped and he was busy working on sales, which was his top priority. Sounds like they are short handed or don't know how to run a business. I am still holding on to the memories of the good times I have had in it when it was running like it should. I am hoping to get over this hurdle and have it back to normal sometime soon.

I will keep you all posted on the final outcome. Thanks again for the help and advice!

Re: Popping, Backfiring, Stalling, and Not Starting

Yeah it is fixed and running great! Just got back from a weekend of riding and never once had any issues. The dealer did replace the wire harness at the ignition switch, at my request and it did the trick!

Finally got a chance to show the Rhino's in our group who's boss!
