Engine oil question

Polaris specs out their PS-4 Plus synthetic oil for the engine. Does anyone know what the weight is? Also, what are most using in the engine?

Also, why is the front axle gear oil different from the rear. Does the front axle have clutch plates? What is the stuff Polaris specs for the front axle. I normally use M1 synthetic gear oil.

Re: Engine oil question

I use Ams-Oil 0-40 weight is which the same weight that is recommended by Polaris. Also use a Wix Oil Filter. I still use all of the Polaris Fluids for the Frt. Diff, Rear Diff, and the Trans. and Trans. Case. The Frt. Diff especially because of the Hillard Clutches because its controlled Electrically and the Polaris Fluid works Great. I change the Frt. and Rear Diff after every ride. Because of where we ride at there is a great chance of getting in Water in the Diffs. to me that is Cheap Insurance to keep everything working good, and its not that expensive to do. So maybe this helps.

Re: Engine oil question

I have been in touch with Hillard today. I have left a message with "Matt Cowen" the Polaris front axle unit design facility manager. I will post back what he states about approved fluids for the front axle, other than Polaris. I'm not going to be held ransom by the Polaris dealer and made to purchase their over priced lubricating products. Besides, I'm an hours drive from my dealer.

Thank you for your reply though, as you have answered my first question regarding the engine oil. As the engine is a separate crank case and does not hold wet clutches and transmission gears, I will most likely go with some type of a M1 automotive synthetic product. M1 M4 is for M/C wet clutch applications and M1 V-Twin is designed for Harley engines and is too heavy for the Razor. So I'm thinking a 0-40 automotive M1 product.

Re: Engine oil question

alba racing recomended maxima racing oil
they said polaris oil was junk i belive it too i was all about using oem oil
untill i had to have a new bottom end put in
then after that i still used it for about 10 hours and then switched to maxima extra 15w50
the oem oil ex. i rode 40 miles and had to add 6 oz of oil
then the next day i rode the same amount and again had to add 6 oz
sense the switch to maxima no more adding oil everyday stays full every day no matter
how far you ride
i know all this talk about oils is so confusing and i know polaris requires 0w-40 but
if you live in a warmer climate there is no sense in having oil that thin
you cant go wrong with maxima ....

Re: Engine oil question

I know when I had my 800 I would lose oil using the Polaris oil. I then switched to Rotella T6 5w-40 full synthetic and it has a ZDDP content of 1200ppm. Stopped burning oil. I have now kept using that in my 900 for 2 years know with some hard driven miles in the dunes. Changed oil after every 3 trips.

Front diff uses a electromagnetic locker by Hilliard. Supposably the locker will not engage\disengage correctly if 80\90 style fluid is used. Hilliard recommends Mobil 424 or LT (Light Transmission fluid) I use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF

We had over 700mi on both our 570's we traded in for the XP4. I used Mobil 1 0-40 & Mobil 1 M1-110 or WIX 51356 filter from day 1 (literally day 1) NEVER a problem what so ever out of either unit. I am running Mobil 1 15-50 in the XP4. If you wanted to strictly use Motorcycle oils "JASO" only I would recommend the 4T 10-40 or V-Twin 20-50 depending on your weather conditions.
