Ported head, bigger valves, stage 3 cams, 11.5:1 comp pistons. How much is timing??

I've ran this setup at 3 and 4 degrees advanced and no issues. I'm just wondering what others think or have ran for timing with similar setups on premium pump gas. Thx.

3 or 4 degrees initial or total timing... I know of a few guys running 7 to 9 degrees more timing on stock motors........I know what i think is stock timing and that seems way high....just my .02

Are you using a Power Commander? I stopped making power on the dyno at around 5deg above stock timing on the big end, so i run it around 3 to 4 above stock. I would assume your not gonna make much more power where your running now and could probably leave stock timing only in there to give yourself a little room for error and not really leave much power on the table as well.

So I;m running up to four over stock with 11.5 comp pistons. Is that safe with pump gas? Or should I stay at 3?

Nate has had a lot of motors on the dyno......He is a great person and shouldn't steer you wrong........if you are using his combination,I would go with what he says.........not every builder has the same ideas or knowledge,so what I suggest is what works for my builds(doesn't mean that there aren't others that work better)

We see the same on this 1 Don and Rogue found the same with his independent testing as well. I limit to 4 degrees advance over stock at any given rpm. Anyhting past that we started seeing a drop in HP and a need for additional octane.

Re: Ported head, bigger valves, stage 3 cams, 11.5:1 comp pistons. How much is timing

I'm pretty conservative on timing.......I like to allow for changes in fuel & running hard on hot days......if I'm building a true race only motor, then good fuel is a must,......I then time to max torque & them back off 1 to 2 degrees....again my .02

Re: Ported head, bigger valves, stage 3 cams, 11.5:1 comp pistons. How much is timing

I think you got the input you were looking for. I'm running 4 over max, and thats only at the top. I'm also running nothing but premium now and have a little room being at 6000ft. I'm also running stock CR. If i was running your CR, i'd just drop it back to stock timing to be safe and not worry about it. If i remember right, when i was on the dyno, the difference between stock timing up top and 4deg over was 1 maybe 2whp max. Nothing to write home about....

if i remember right pass 6000rpm i put the timing back to 0 because i was loosing HP if I add timing. ( and i have pretty much the same setup as you)

True statement Tim!

I think I'll back it off to 3 degrees advanced. This motor runs pretty snappy, almost like a big 2 stroke twin in a sled.

Thx for the input guys.

Just thinking now, do you guys run the same timing every where in the rpm/throttle range? I've just been running the same timing from low/mid to top end. As well as startup/idle range.
