Re: water pump seal - design flaw!!

Just guessing by the pictures and not knowing if their is a reason that is a bad dezigne. Needs to be an outlet for the water if the seal goes bad (and not into the crank case). Has their been many people with this issue?

Re: water pump seal - design flaw!!

I don't think many have had a water pump seal go out, these are still new machines and without the external weep hole they should last a long long time (external weep holes can contaminate the back side of the seal).

I would rather replace the $7 seal more often than find water in my oil. I've got 2 options I want to look at.

#1 is putting another oil seal that is trimmed down between the original oil seal and the mechanical water pump seal but turned around backwards so it will hold pressure from the water pump side.

#2 is possible drilling a hole between the 2 seals if there is not enough room for #1 and only if the gap between the 2 falls outside the portion of the pump that fits inside the crank case.

i haven't pulled the mechanical seal out yet, been working on other projects and this is not a priority until the replacement comes in. I ordered 2 of both seals so I can see what mods can be done.

Re: water pump seal - design flaw!!

Also, I am going to my dealer that I have a good relationship with in the morning to discuss this problem. Owner is a stand up guy. Main reason being I want them to document for future record what caused the water to get in the motor because it is only a matter of time before the bottom end spins a bearing after being run with so much water in it. I have a 4 year extended warranty through an aftermarket company. It would be different if I had sunk the motor and damaged it myself.

I would really like to contact the regional Polaris rep and see if he has heard or seen anything like this yet because it is only a matter of time before someone locks a motor up from water in the oil due to a bad seal.

Re: water pump seal - design flaw!!

Over the weekend I look in the service manual and don't think will be enough space between mechanical seal and oil seal to install extra seal, but maybe will look different when you take pump at parts.

Re: water pump seal - design flaw!!

I don't think so either, but i'll take pics and measurements this afternoon if I get a chance to pull the pump an seals apart.

I might be able to take the oil seal to a seal house and get a double lip seal in the same size to take care of the problem.

Re: water pump seal - design flaw!!

update: the oil seal behind the water pump seal has a double lip so turning a seal around on the shaft is not going to do much good.

Looking at the main shaft through mine, the water pump seal has been out for a while, the shaft is pitted and rusty between the 2 seals. My take is the water pump seal start leaking quite a while ago and the oil seal did its job until the pressure against the sealing lip wore enough of a groove in the shaft that water starting going by.

Good news is there is room to put an external weep hole between the 2 seals. Approx. 4.4mm of room to drill a hole and run a drain line down to monitor the seal leakage. i'll see what I can find.

Re: water pump seal - design flaw!!

I couldn't find a fitting with thin enough walls to drill and press into the water pump housing. I put it all back together and my milking situation is fixed! I'll try to find a peice of stainless tubing to press in there and run a tube off of for a tattle tale.

Did you ever get a tube to fit in the weep hole? I have a weep hole but can't think of a way to run tubing for a tattle tale

Re: water pump seal - design flaw!!

I don't recall seeing that weep hole on my unit. I got in a hurry and did not rig anything up, just put it back together stock. There is not much room between the 2 seals to open it up for a piece of tubing to press in.
