Re: Most Miles on a 800 without an engine rebuild
At 6000 miles, I pulled my motor and tranny to rebuild a broken trans to motor mount. While the motor was out, I decided I may as well do a top end overhaul....it was using a little over 1 pint of oil every 1000 miles. It was still running fine.
When I took the head to a machine shop to have the valves and head reworked, the machine shop said nothing was needed. He didn't even put in the new valve seats....just cleaned it up and said it was good to go. We cleaned up the cylinder walls with mouratic acid, and installed new pistons and rings. (at the time rings were on back order, but the piston/ring kits were available...I didn't want to wait so bought the piston/ring kit)
I mostly trail ride in AZ, CA and UT. I run the stock air filter.....I grease the air filter seals prior to installation....change air filter as needed. Change engine oil every 1000 miles....change the rest of the oils annually.
Problems I've had....bought it used with a broken trans to motor mount. Wasn't careful enough with keeping my fuel clean, and plugged the filter on the internal pump assembly, and broken trans to motor mount caused the "CPS" crank position sensor to fail....(sensor was banging and rubbing on trans.)
