sounds like top end/valve train

always fairly loud, last month I changed oil with 2 quarts of polaris oil and a polaris filter
engine got louder, (no I did not mess anything up I know how to change oil)
didn't think much of it, went to ride it last week and thing had no power and valve train very loud, brought to dealer they had the valve cover off said rockers push rods and lifters seem ok they arent sure whats wrong and are still working on it...

of course the Snirt ride (coolest ride of the year) is this weekend and its still in the shop, and of course my king quad 700 for back up has been at Suzuki for two weeks cause they misdiagnosed it last time and have been jerking me around doing god knows what...

anyway anyone heard of these machines making valve train noise and what was wrong..ps never been in a mudd bogg or abused, almost all miles are snow miles ridding this past winter , always warmed up before I rode

sounds alot like this....

It's like Deja Vu all over again!

Several threads here, this has been asked a lot of times. Lot's of varying degrees of "advice" thrown on it, but never have seen a post detailing a cause, effect, or resolution of this issue.

Mine makes the ticking sound at idle when fully warmed up, I noticed it about 4,500 miles ago right after what I would consider to be full break in period. I was told it was probably the sound of the injectors, and I turned up the headphones and kept riding. Have 5600 miles plus right now, no problems.

dealer and I say its not normal, also has sever lack of power... which obviously isn't normal,
thanks for the link, unfortunately its just a bunch of others with the same problem no one had a solution... I always thought the exhaust rattled since day one but with a stethoscope on the head you hear the noise very clearly

Not sure about the power loss, but intake and exhaust valves do make a clattering noise as they open and close. That means they are working.

Yikes. I hope they've done a few engine removals/replacements before this one.

I have a 2013 RZR S 800 and while riding it the engine popped and died, took it to the dealer and they said dust/dirt in throttle body caused crank to break and piston turned sideways. only 21 hrs on machine no contamination of any fluids / oil trans or diff's but NOT covered by warranty. No muddin just riding in pasture and over hills till after 25 hrs breakin period. POOR customer service, any ideas for an engine swap from a motorcycle engine to fit transmission.

got the rzr back friday runs great, got a new cam pistons rings crank

@harvey66 thats not acceptable to me I would be on the phone with polaris or tell them to take it back
for the record dealer said if mine wasnt covered it would have been around 1800 to be rebuilt

Having had it happen to me once...

I would guess that your motor was using oil?

I would also guess that you "dusted" the motor. They get that noisy as everything is going to H*ll in a handbasket.

Never figured out how the dust got into the motor, but I know what it did...and I learned from that and developed a very good inspection/maintenance routine to do my best to make sure it doesn't happen again!!!

Did you get a chance to see what the throttle body or intake ports looked like? Probably like this:

Just about willing to bet...

Ummm...cleaning it was sending the motor back to Holz and having everything but the engine cases and the valve cover replaced.

Totally wrecked the motor!! And to this day I don't know how it happened, but I sure keep a close eye on things these days!!!

Oh, about $4000 that I remember. Holz made me a good deal, I'm not sure if they found something they did, or I just had poor damn luck.

Its been running since July 2010, but I've got it apart now, turns out the valve guides, valve stems and valve seals were worn, so using a little more oil than I wanted. Plus doing a few more hp improvements....

I would hazard a guess that the screw that holds the weight to the outer sheave failed, the pieces kept the weight in the clutch...but yup, that would make a lot of noise.

I have begun to carry an extra set of the three screws and nuts with me in the Toyhauler...just for good measure!!

The rollers are on a pin and are supposed to spin freely...its one of the things that dust and debris gets into, then the roller won't spin an wears the weights.

Just remembering,
