Big wheel kit question....

For those of you that have used the factory big wheel kit, is the new gearing faster than stock? I put the wheels/tires on but never bothered changing out the sprockets and chain that came with the kit. I was trying to figure out the math, but with the increase in tire diameter I was getting a headache...

My initial thought was it probably just geared down for a little more low end which would not help top end....

Any experience? Should I make the change?

Re: Big wheel kit question....

I have the kit installed on my sons 170 and did NOT make the change. The stock gearing has worked flawlessly for the last 150 miles in all types of conditions; mud, steep climbs, hard pack, ruts. Prior to the BWK he ran the 170 with stock tires for about 50 miles, after the upgrade he claimed a bit more snap out of the hole. The top speed pans out at 31 mph

Re: Big wheel kit question....

31 is the same number I'm getting....I'm just wondering what difference the gear change will make...

Re: Big wheel kit question....

I have installed the full big wheel kit, new sprockets and skid plate. Here is what I have found. My top speed before the kit was 27 mph and with the gear change I get 34mph top end. I did notice it takes longer to get up to speed but is faster. We live in Fl so we mostly drive in suger sand, water and mud. We went out after the install and it has more clearance for the water and overall performed great. I will say that I noticed it struggling to get up the ramp when loading it on the trailer from a dead stop. It seems to have lost some low end power. I am not sure how that will effect the hill climbing in other areas then Fl. Talking with the polaris dealer he explained polaris designed the kit specificly not to tear up the transmission with the bigger tires. His explaination is that the engine is not powerful enough to turn much bigger tires or too agressive treads effectively. What I want to know from someone is which stock sprocket would you put back on to get back some of the low end power? And how do you think it will effect the transmission concern the dealer has? Hope this helps someone.

I paid just under $500 for them at Search Results for "babbitsonline.com", they have an MSRP of nearly $700, they are a Polaris OEM part. The kit also comes with a new chain and sprokets, I left the stock as is, more low end and tops out at 32mph.

The tires lift at least 3 inches over stock. The tires are only 2 ply, was worried about that at first, we ride on a lot of shale and jagged rock, havn't had any problems as of yet, 150+ miles.

Thanks for the info on wheel size.

Trying to decide between 10" and 12" diameter rims

Usa Re: Big wheel kit question....

Has anyone found a non Polaris option that would achieve the same result without the 700+ (after shipping) price tag?
