modified stock cage
Has anyone beefed up the stock cage. looks like it would be easy and a lot cheaper than buying a whole new cage. Please post pics of beefed up cages if you got em.

Re: modified stock cage
I'm working on that myself!! On my Ranger xp i bought the fender guards because of all the tight fits between trees to protect my body. Where i ride its always in the woods... kinda making your own trails. I have looked for after market fender guards for my RZR. I would also be interested in some after market additional bracing.. I don't really want to spend the money on a new cage...just want to beef the stock one up a little. A freind of mine owns a machine shop and is working on some additions. I'll let you know how it goes!!

Amen, safer after market roll cages aren't that expensive. They will do a lot more for your safety then an expensive set of wheels and tires. I'm always amazed to see how many people still have the stock cage on. It makes me think of the old Bell helmet advertisement that said " If you have a $10.00 head, wear a $10.00 helmet"

Re: modified stock cage
Mine's been reinforced. It took a lot less time than building an entirely new cage and is probably sturdier than a lot of the "custom" built cages I've seen pictures of with zero triangulation.

Re: modified stock cage
Here you go ...
Here's a good one where you can see the cross-piece in the front as well as one of the side pieces
Here are a couple more

Re: modified stock cage
thats exactly what I have in mind. I want to run a piece down the middle in the front and 2 pieces across the back to triangulate it other than that I like it. did you paint it or powder coat it?

Re: modified stock cage
Mudinyeri I'v looked at your pictures before and stupid enough I didnt notice you added extra material to the stock cage. Kind of stealth, NICE JOB.

Re: modified stock cage
I'm having the same thing done to my cage too. I mean I like the aftermarket cages, but if you can reinforce the one you have to provide comparable protection without the price then, why not?

I just painted it a semi-gloss black. Nice and easy to touch up if it gets against a tree or a rock or something.
I've also thought about cutting out the hokey, tinfoil gussets in the back and creating an X behind the seats as well as putting a V in the front. Not enough time in the day ... LOL

Re: modified stock cage
did you remove the cage when you did it? Did you tig weld it? My uncle used to build race car chassis so he is gonna do it for me.I thought about just starting from scratch, but He said if I add stronger pipe to what is already there it will stiffen the whole thing up a ton.

Re: modified stock cage
Be smart buy a quality cage. The stock cage will fold like a lawn chair even if you brace it like the one pictured. The weak points are the A pillar and B pillar, and there is still no rear bracing to keep it from collapsing backwards.
IMO if your life, and anyone who drives or rides in your RZR, is important then be safe and buy a good cage.

Pretty strong statement. I guess everyone who's riding around with a stock cage has a death wish ... or would like to kill those riding with them, huh?
For 99% of people, they'll never push the RZR hard enough to need a true roll cage. For the other 1%, reinforcing the cage can work as well as starting from scratch - even better in some cases. As I mentioned earlier, I've seen a lot of aftermarket cages that have virtually no triangulation and very little, if any, side to side or front to back reinforcement.
My designs are all reviewed by a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and 2-3 people with 15+ years each fabricating, racing, offroading and rolling (including me).
For the cost of three pieces of tubing and little welding wire, my cage is probably twice as strong as the original.

You don't have to push an RZR to roll it.

That is is the most irresponsible statement I have ever seen on this forum or any forum. You are just plain stupid if you believe that.

I said buy a quality cage....key word is quality...and quality means safe with proper triangulation, X bracing, V bracing and rear bracing to the frame and preferably out of chromoly..
My designs are all reviewed by a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and 2-3 people with 15+ years each fabricating, racing, offroading and rolling (including me)..[/quote]
No reputable off-road fabricator would add bars to a stock cage as you did and call it safe.

It may be twice as strong as a stock cage but only 1/10th the strength of a quality built chromoly cage.
