Re: modified stock cage

Two firemen were killed just a few weeks ago in an RZR. Rolled over backwards, stock cage folded like a cheap suit.

The stock cage is made of .065 HREW.
Most of the aftermarket cages I have seen are .090 HREW.

1020 DOM has twice the tensile strength of typical mild HREW.

I don't like Chrome Moly and neither does Nascar. The problem with Chrome Moly is that it is very hard to weld correctly and cure the weld.
The result is you usually have a cage with great steel and bad welds.

1020 DOM is the gold standard for offroad cages, it has almost the same strength as Chrome Moly and an average welder can make very strong welds. The result is a better cage and less costs.

I have seen 3 stock cages after mild, relatively low speed accidents.
I think it is a POS and a lawsuit waiting to happen.

BTW, Chris at UTV magazine replaced his re-inforced stock cage with an aftermarket cage after just a few races.

Long Travel Kit for RZR Rzrtech.com - I got 4 cages from Steve and was VERY happy with all four of them. He has tons of options for his cages, anything from door skins to a stock oem replacement with seatbelt mounts and all. His cages are pretty affordable, check him out.

Re: modified stock cage

Crush or impact zones are in the front and rear of the vehicle, NOT the top. The cage around a race car is rigid to protect the occupants. I've got my new cage on and love it. I don't care what it looks like, I just wanted to know that in the event of a rollover the cage wasn't going to come down on me. Look at razrgirls' photos that is with the bracing behind the main cage. Without that bracing it could have been worse.

Re: modified stock cage

Redman are you talking about the two fireman in Southern Oregon. If so I do not know anyone who could have built a cage to save those two. Not trying to becold harded, but the flipped backwards and tumbled over 1200' down into a canyon. If you know of someone who came build a cage for that kind of accident and are willing to put it in writing go for it. Just my .02

Redman,
That actually is not the case with 4140/4340 that is under .250" thick. The normalization process has not been able to make the weld hold better, the parent material usually always fails at the HAZ. Everything on a UTV is going to use a light wall so no problems. The number one overriding factor for not using chromo is cost, not welding in my experience.

Re: modified stock cage

Don t know if the info I got was correct, but saw some cages being made in a shop. The do trophy truck and were using .090 and .120Chrom tube and welding it with a mig welder with ER70s wire. I question them on it and was told that is fine and that it was a myth that it had to be tig welded. They dont even have it norm'd or heat treated. They went as far as to show me some rolled truck cages and although the tube was bent ... it didnt tear split at any welds.

Re: modified stock cage

i would much rather replace the $490.00 dollar stock cage than take a chance on bending the frame that would be very expensive to fix polaris parts are not cheap

Re: modified stock cage

I guess anyone can say anything at anytime and really not know what they are saying or meaning. You guys that are responding to male hormones. Have either one of you had a stock roll cage tested? At what point do they collapse or not collapse? Will they hold a 1000 lbs RZR in a roll over? Not just words, proof. Should they not be provided by the manufacture? Words are easy but proof is in the pudding. Come on guys put up or shut up

Re: modified stock cage

I know they have changed the tube psi for the 09. It is 30% stronger They went from 50k psi to 75k psi. Does that mean there was a problem? They woudn't change it unless there was in my mind.

its about half way in on the video and the talk about the changes in the cage.
