Homemade heater plans
Here's some quick sketch plans of a heater I made back when I had my rhino. I plan on making another one for my rzr soon.
Basically buy a heater core off ebay or a small atv radiator. You can get them for about $25. Build a sheet metal box to put it in with a large hole cut on each side for air to flow through it and attach a 12v low amp fan to one side. Hook into the coolant lines before the radiator with a couple T ball valves, so you can detour the coolant through the heater core before going to the radiator. My original one had quick disconnects for removing it in the summer, but I ended up leaving it in to help keep from overheating when the normal radiator got plugged with mud. It shouldn't cost more than $100 to build it with all new materials. You can save more if you have some of the stuff sitting around the garage.

Re: Homemade heater plans
hey kimmer if you put a single valve between your tee's you can make it simpler you can also set it up as a mix valve
if it's a ball valve the same size as the inlet and outlet where you're not restricting the flow, the pressure on both tee's will be the same and the coolant will pretty much sit in the heater core when the valve is open.
it also makes it where you cant accidently line the valves up opposite of each other and cut off the water.

Re: Homemade heater plans
Good idea Marty, I never really thought about the pressure/flow. I guess I got lucky on the rhino...lol.

Re: Homemade heater plans
This is a great project idea!
You think a 12V 4" "muffin" fan would work? That'd be nice & quiet...

Re: Homemade heater plans
Plenty of room under the dash and out of sight. You can either cut a vent in the dash to defog the windshield, or just have it blow out from under the dash onto the driver/passenger.
The one I made for the rhino used one of the two radiators that come on the 85-86 honda atc and I made the box with thin sheet metal from menards/lowes like you would use for heat ducts. The sheet metal was easy to fab with and rivet together. This thing is under the dash and not taking hits from rocks, so no reason to over do it with heavy steel. I ran mine for 2 years with zero problems.

I don't think it would be a concern in the cab but it has made me think. I don't go thru water like you do but I don't want to rule it out, either. What kind of 12V fan can be submerged & survive? I know there are small fans used on some oil coolers & such and since they're right in a car's grill they must be sealed. But these aren't typically intended to be slow & quiet fans.

Re: Homemade heater plans
Here is how I hooked up the fan. Just a boat motor blower. I have a filter on it now. The second picture is where the water leaving the heater core goes to the radiator. If water does get up to it you are really deep!

Re: Homemade heater plans
First controls the amount of water going through the heater core to adjust temp. Cable controlled. The second one is with the piece I made to get the water before the thermo.

Thanks!!
Some kind of electrical enclosure and a 70 ford Bronco heater core and heater control. Once I get it finished it will be black. Going to run the top hole to the defrost.
