DragonFire Racing Airbox Install Review.

Machine:
Polaris RZR 2008
Date of manufacture 11-2007

Cost Delivered $450.99

What's in the box;
Airbox canister
Small UNI filter (for the crankcase)
Mounting Bracket (Transmission)
Canister mounting band
Assorted bolts & nuts for the two mounting brackets.
And the air filter.

What's not in the box;
Instructions. But if you need instructions on how to install something this simple you
shouldn't be turning your own wrenches anyways.

Out of the box impressions;
Nice quality, nice welds on the aluminum.
I think there are too many air intake cuts on the canister for a 800-cc engine.
Nice size lip on the intake track that mates with the OEM rubber throttle body coupler.

Installation experience;
This very straight forward but I did run into a few minor issues.
Issues;
1: The bolt that hold the ignition coils to the frame of the machine was rubbing/pushing on the air canister and had to be cut down.
2: The support mount, that mounts to the transmission that supports the canister if mounted into the lower two holes on the OEM transmission mount placed the canister to far behind the frame rail and therefor unable to remove the canister cap to access the air filter. So I used the upper two holes, or the middle and the upper. This allows more access to remove the canister cover but it is still tight and semi difficult to remove. The supporting bracket comes with two bolts but if the 2nd one is installed when using the upper holes on the transmission mount as I did it will interfere with the shift linkage. (I only used one bolt and "lock-tited")

Notes:
If the supporting mount was about 1" higher then I think this would fix the issue.

Overall thoughts, ideas, and impression;
If your a submariner then this is not the airbox for you.
I think the single most improvement would be eliminating the intake "cuts" that go half way round the canister and replacing with a 2" or 3" intake tube nipple so you could run a hose down to the canister from a higher cleaner air source. (I may just weld mine up this way after I ride this weekend, but the area where I would like to install a nipple is too close to the OEM exhaust pipe.)
The air canister does work with the OEM suspension and wheels and tires, I really looks like it would rub but it doesn't I tested this by removing the shock and lifting the wheel to the highest point to simulate the suspension arch. I have new wheels and tires coming this week so I'll test again when I install them.
The air filter itself is from Donaldson and is for heavy machinery so I would assume if it can filter out the dust and dirt from a construction site and protect 100k machines it should do a great job protecting a 800-cc engine.
Might try getting an outerwares that I can use on the outside of the air canister just to help filter the air before it enters the canister.

Cost:
Is it worth $450? if it protects my engine, then to me yes it is.
What do I feel would have been a better price point $350.00.
$450 would be Ok it there was a 2-3 inch nipple welded on for a remote air intake.

I had to I promised RZRider from a previous thread, where I inquired about the Dragonfire Racing airbox and then indicated that I ordered one.

Send me some product I'll be more than happy to compose installation manuals for you. I wrote the review rather hastily, heck I'll even do a installation video for you.

Re: DragonFire Racing Airbox Install Review.

I installed my dfr air box this weekend and ran into the same problems, I can see some of the modifying you have to do but no instruction that's just stupid. I ran mine through a lot of mud and water for an hour, with no back plastic on it and i can't belive it didn't suck in any water. Nice post

RE: No more dirt in my engine thanks to the new CYCLONE RZR Filter from BTI Performance Products - BTI Performance Products
availble from Yamaha Rhino Accessories, Yamaha Rhino Performance, Arctic Cat Prowler, Polaris Ranger, Custom Yamaha Rhino @ DragonFireRacing.com

My name is J. Rhodes and I just recently purchased an Air filter for my Polaris RZR directly from you. Installation was simple and straight forward.

Took it out for a trial run this weekend and was amazed with the results. We rode in so much dust you could literally not breathe without a mask or some type of filtration device on your face. (no joke) We logged 69.5 miles this weekend and could barely tell one bike from another with all the dust at the end of the day. I figured I was due for a rebuild after that trip and expected to be scooping dust out of the airbox.

Well........upon inspection there wasnt a single grain of sand in the air boot! Granted there was a ton of dust on the filter and in the canister but with a little compressed air and a wet cloth I was back in business.

Just wanted to thank you guys for building a superior product and backing up your claims. Thats rare in business today and even with price point set where it is, it is still well worth the investment.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you,

J. Rhodes

Re: DragonFire Racing Airbox Install Review.

Txmd500 My cannister came. no instructions. They said they would email, but nothing. I used your installation notes to help.

First I'm 71 and never wrenched and shouldn't be now. Neighbor helped when 4 hands were needed to get can on rubber boot. I noted your comments on use of two top holes,and comment on just 1 but ended up with 2 bottom holes and new bracket inside support. Doesn't line up to take filter straight out but filter goes in and out if cocked and cannister seems free of all places to contact and more clear of tire. Just thought you might be interested and it may indicate some changes.

My kit came with a shorter bolt so I just had to remove the stock one and replace it with the one supplied in the kit. Done deal... And mine is dirt/dust free as well!

Re: DragonFire Racing Airbox Install Review.

Looter, yep - you're right - things have improved a lot since the first kits. My instructions also referred to a different crankcase filter to the one supplied (mine was a cool baby UNI filter). Also, this seems all wrong:

Quote:
2: The support mount, that mounts to the transmission that supports the canister if mounted into the lower two holes on the OEM transmission mount placed the canister to far behind the frame rail and therefor unable to remove the canister cap to access the air filter. So I used the upper two holes, or the middle and the upper. This allows more access to remove the canister cover but it is still tight and semi difficult to remove. The supporting bracket comes with two bolts but if the 2nd one is installed when using the upper holes on the transmission mount as I did it will interfere with the shift linkage. (I only used one bolt and "lock-tited")
Mine, you just mounted it to the inner side of the transmission mount, not the outer side, where you might get the problems above.
