Re: Rzr Paint Questions?????
Yup its because of the mold releases used in the plastics.
Sorry I do not know how to make it work. Only a few painters claim to be able to make it work and even then I have my doubts over the long haul. This is why Polaris came out with the black "paintable" plastics. |

im using all sikkens paint products. I decided today to steam clean the paint off and start over. i sand blasted the plastics, so now a filler primer should do good. not sure...

Re: Rzr Paint Questions?????
i have been looking into getting my s painted and everyone that i have talked to said its a process because of the oils in the plastic and that the oils some how have to be removed. not sure how that works but... and the cheapest that i have found to do white with a red pearl on the front back roof and full doors was 1000.

Re: Rzr Paint Questions?????
I painted mine exactly 1 year ago and I race it. It doesn't have a single scratch, chip or blemish after such abuse. I painted a stock, dark green, regular plastic RZR. It can be done, but it takes a lot of prep work. Do not skimp on the prep work. And don't use rattle can paint if you want it to look awesome. Rattle can paint simply does not get as hard as real paint - it will scratch easily and it can't be polished and waxed to a perfect shine.
Materials needed: Medium scuff pads, SEM 39863 Plastic Adhesion Promoter, PPG DX101 Final Scuff, and your choice of paint/hardener/reducer. I went with PPG because they've always worked best for me. I used a white base (2 light coats) followed by 2 light coats of green pearl, followed by 1 light coat and 1 medium coat of clear. You want to keep each coat light and consistant so that it will be able to flex with the plastic and not crack. First, clean the plastics with soap and water. Then use the reducer you picked up for your paint and rub down the plastic thoroughly. Change rags as you go so that you always have a clean rag. After you've done the entire plastics, do them again. With clean rags. Do not skimp here. Then, wet-scuff the plastics using medium scuff pads and the DX101 Final Scuff according to the DX101 directions. This product will further deep-clean the plastics with tiny abrasives in the product. Wipe dry using a clean cloth. At this point you CAN NOT touch the plastics with your skin anymore as this will contaminate the plastics. It may help to wear latex gloves. Next apply the Adhesion Promoter as per the instructions on the can. Follow the instructions, don't just spray it on. And NOW you're ready to paint. The paint will stick. You do not need expensive "paintable" plastics. Just a little time and elbow grease. I painted my entire buggy in one afternoon. Of course, a little painting experience will help in the final product. But if you take the time to really prep the plastics right, the paint will stick great. As I said, I've been abusing mine for a year now and it looks like I painted it yesterday. ![]()

Re: Rzr Paint Questions?????
I paint quad plastics all the time. I've also painted my RZR. I work at a PPG paint store. PPG makes a great product for painting plastics. I should know the name, but I can't remember what they call it. Nanotech or something. Its a 3 part process. It has a scuff sponge (P/N SU4901), a wipe (P/N 4902) and a spray can adhesion promoter (SUA4902). If you use the 3 like the directions say it works amazingly well. At training we sprayed color directly to plastic after using the process. We took a key to it two days later and could not scrape the paint off the plastic. I painted a set of Banshee plastics and you could fold the rear fender in half and not have any problems. If clearcoating use flex-add in the clear only. Don't use Krylon Fusion unless you're on a serious budget. You'll regret it later when that crap goes bad. Its just regular Krylon Krap with a little plastic promoter in it.

Re: Rzr Paint Questions?????
It's all in the prep and the product. I've been painting plastics for years and don't have problems of course three generations of body work helps.
You should add flex additive to your mix also. Use quality automotive products only. I personally use PPG products therefore DX814. If you prep your work properly and apply the products correctly there is no reason for the paint to ever peel. Talon's post sums up the process pretty well. |
