Parking Brake for the RZR

I finally got around to fabbing up a parking brake for the RZR. It took me some time to figure out how I was going to incorporate a cable pull system attached to the brake peddle without having to weld anything because I wanted to make it as simple as possible. The biggest hurdle was figuring out how or what I was going to use to pull the cable for this to work. I decided to use the tilting ability in the steering column as the "brake handle" simply because there's no place to put a hand brake lever anywhere on the RZR and no one that I know of drives with the steering wheel all the way up.

Using spare parts I had lying around the garage this is what I came up with...

I used a broken clutch cable from a motorcycle. The reason I kept this cable was because the cable itself is lined with Teflon and the housing is double wrapped in rubber, perfect for harsh conditions. It was originally 48" long, which was too long for what I needed, and I had to cut the housing down to 32" and the cable down to 40". I also fabbed a bracket out of a piece of aluminum angle, 1½ x 1½ x 3¼", and painted it black.

I drilled a hole through the plastic in the firewall on the left side of the brake master cylinder. This was the best place to go through and still be able to connect it to the brake peddle. I also drilled a hole through the brake peddle and tapped it (¼"-20 stainless steel socket head bolt and a stainless steel nut to lock it tight) so I could attach the cable to it using a cable mount.

I drilled another hole through the gusset support for the steering wheel for the cable to go through.

Using the bolt that the tilt wheel pivots at, I mounted the angle bracket that I made and feeding the cable through it. The bracket is long enough to reach all the way to the top of the column giving the bracket support to pivot with the column.

With everything adjusted correctly this works great and is almost totally hidden. To set the parking brake all you do is push the brake peddle down hard and then tilt the steering wheel all the way up.

Normal driving position.

Brake peddle works as it did originally.

With the Steering wheel all the way up.

Brake peddle is held down.

Continued....

Here's the video showing how it works...

Total cost for me to do this = $0.00 and about 4 hours. The longest part was figuring out how to make it work. Now that I know how and what needs to be done it probably will only take about an hour to do it again.

That is probably one of the best Ideas I have seen in a long time for a simple Cheap fix.

Re: Parking Brake for the RZR

I like your style. Super ingenuity, simple design. GREAT JOB!!!
Now you need to fab. parts, mass produce, sell & make MILLIONS!!!
That way, Super Joe mechanic can install your system bassackwards, back over their foot & sue you for $20,000,000.
It’s the American way.

Re: Parking Brake for the RZR

Excellent work. I suggest you head to a patent attorney tomorrow morning. Seriously. with the amount of these things that are gonna sell over the coming years it could be worth some serious $.

Of course you're welcome to include me as an adviser.
