My Fuel Can Solution

When I saw the Polaris fuel can setup I was underwhelmed so I decided I wanted Scepter cans.

Scepter makes Fuel, water, diesel, and other cans for the military. These are incredibley rugged cans made of very heavy plastic. I've seen pictures of them after they have been driven over by a 4x4 and they still held fuel.

For reasons I won't detail they are no longer shipping them to the USA so if you want one you better act fast. I got mine at Sleeoffroad.com - Toyota SUV Off-Road Outfitters. Slee is well known in the offroad world.

Scepters come in 10l and 20L aka 2.5 Gal and 5 Gal cans. Dimensionally they similar to old style Jerry cans so they fit the carriers we have had for years, you've seen them strapped to Jeeps etc.

I purchased both 2.5 and 5 gal cans. Both fit the same can holder so I can choose which to take on a ride.

I made my own lock-n-ride using a 1" rubber stopper which I drilled and 1"x3/8" nylon spacer, a 2" stainless #10 screw and #10 stainless T-Nut which holds itself into the rubber stopper with barbs.

Two of my lock-n-rides attach the bottom of the can holder (like the polaris can holder) and a third secures the can holder to the side of the bed. The three of them make the holder very solid.

As you can see in the pics the can and holder fits nicely on the side shelf so it will fit with the Polaris cargo box.

I don't wrestle the cans I use a Super Siphon to move the fuel.

Side Lock-n-ride bracket, 1/8" strap steel bolted into the standard mounting holes on the can holder. This is the only piece I had to make. Simply bent the strap and drilled 3 holes. Painted it black.

Very nice. I have the polaris can. Pretty weak not to mention if it gets bouncy I may have some gas spilling out of the poor threaded area.

BRAVO!! Nice idea. When the Polaris can gets heated it warps and you will need some monster grip pliers to remove the cap. The ratchet swells and you can't squeeze the release to remove the cap.
Normal heat or cold is not an issue, 3 days in the Mojave at 112 was a HUGE issue!

If you don't mind, how much are those cans?

Re: My Fuel Can Solution

You can buy the Polaris quick connects separately for builds as well. So it can come out quickly as well.

Re: My Fuel Can Solution

The 10 liter Specter cans are $35. They're nice for the weight, but most of the guys I've talked to who've used them over the years are now back to metal cans. The seals on the plastic cans with the screw lids tend to wear out over the years.

Wedco makes some pretty incredible metal cans for the same price. You can get 5 gallon, 2.7 gallon and 1.25 gallon cans here: Wedco Jerrycan: Fuel Cans:Jerry cans:Wedco

Re: My Fuel Can Solution

I have two 2ga 4oz (who thought of that size?) cans from Home Depot. They don't leak, but I think they're only going to last a couple of years. They only have one threaded part, because they comply with the CA spill proof law. They spill more if you ask me, but they work good. I just rubber snubber them down without a mount.
