2012 Pikes Peak UTV Build

The 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb RZR-X build thread is here

All Terrain Research, MCX-USA, Fox Racing Shox, STM Clutches, DHP Composites and RZRForums.net has been constructing one of the fastest, best handling, hardest braking and most extreme UTV to ever hit the tarmac!

This year marks the 90th running of the Race to the Clouds and it's also the first year that the entire course is paved. With the added pavement we've decided to transform the RZR-X once again to adapt to what is now an even faster and more technical course.

So stay tuned for more firsts in the Side by Side world!

Re: 2012 Pikes Peak UTV Build

With the added pavement comes higher speeds - so our first order of business was the brakes. Fortunately for me ATR just happened to have this department covered:

ATR Polaris RZR Big Brake Kit

With this kit alone we were able to easily shave off 15' on our 60-0 brake test compared to the stock brakes with racing compound pads.

With the stock brakes and racing compound pads the X was able to come to a complete stop from 60 mph in 93 feet.

After the brake swap we were able to knock down the 60 to 0 in just 78 feet!

The 78' was also achieved on knobby tires with no front sway bar and dreadful weight transfer. The fronts clamped down so hard that the rear brakes were not as affective. I'm confident that with improved suspension components, adjustable sway bars and sticky tires the RZR-X will be able to do 60 to 0 in the low 70' to high 60' mark.

To help put these braking numbers into perspective, here is a list of 60 to 0 times for some cars that you might be more familiar with:

2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition
60-0 MPH: 93 ft
Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport Cup
Tire Size, Front: 285/30ZR19 87Y
Tire Size, Rear: 335/25ZR20 94Y
Brakes, Front: 15.5-in vented, drilled, carbon-ceramic disc/6-piston, ABS
Brakes, Rear: 15.0-in vented, drilled carbon-ceramic disc/4-piston, ABS

2008 Ferrari 430 Scuderia
60-0 MPH: 93 ft
Tires: Pirelli PZero Corsa
Tire Size, Front: 235/35ZR19 97Y
Tire Size, Rear: 285/35ZR19 99Y
Brakes, Front: 15.6-in vented, drilled, carbon-ceramic disc/6-piston, ABS
Brakes, Rear: 13.7-in vented, drilled carbon-ceramic disc/4-piston, ABS

2010 Porsche 911 GT3
60-0 MPH: 94 ft
Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport Cups
Tire Size, Front: 235/35ZR19 87Y
Tire Size, Rear: 305/30ZR19 102Y
Brakes, Front: 15.0-in vented, drilled, disc/6-piston, ABS
Brakes, Rear: 13.8-in vented, drilled, disc/4-piston, ABS

2010 Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce
60-0 MPH: 98 ft
Tires: Pirelli PZero Corsa
Tire Size, Front: 245/35ZR18 92Y
Tire Size, Rear: 335/30ZR18 102Y
Brakes, Front: 15-in vented, drilled carbon-ceramic disc, 6-piston, ABS
Brakes, Rear: 15-in vented, drilled carbon-ceramic disc, 6-piston, ABS

Great project!
Is there an official UTV class now in the PPIHC?

Not yet, however Travis Tollett will also be racing this year in a RZR XP. So we're getting closer

Re: 2012 Pikes Peak UTV Build

One of the colleges in Colorado Springs came up with about five posters to help promote the race this year and it was cool to see that they used one of my pictures from last year:

Re: 2012 Pikes Peak UTV Build

The guy that owns a buggy shop at Little Sahara says he is racing his rzr xp this year in pikes peak. He said that the discovery channel is doing a special on his co-pilot and covering him in the event. Im excited to see more rzrs in this event.

I thought Doug was the only UTV invited to race last time along with Travis XP mentioned above this go around. Did they open it up to a small number of machines, or still invite only?

That was probably John. He's the one building the XP for Travis. The more publicity we can get the better
