Don't you think Honda would make a killing making a modern version of the Pilot? One seater and a two seater. How about the tranny? CVT? ESP? or the automotive style in the Big Red? How about the motor? Single or Twin? I'm thinking a single seat, ESP, with a large single for about $9,500 to start. What do you guys think???

I've often wondered why the Pilot wasn't a bigger hit?

Re: Bring back the Honda Pilot...(not the minivan)

I can chime in here since this is where my passion is at!!!! The pilots were not popular because they cost over $5000 at a time when a top of the line quad could be bought for less than $2000.... As far as a "modern" pilot, the engineering and build quality of the pilots from 89 and 90 far surpasses anything out there now,so all they would need to do is reproduce the exact same thing again....
As far as the engine, the 400 is perfect for woods riding...For sand and open areas,it could use a bit more....The performance is built into the suspension and handleing of the pilot...It is not a mudding machine,or a rock crawler, but even in stock form with a good driver, there's not a rzr, commander, etc on the market now that can keep up with it through woods trails....
A couple of years ago, myself and a friend raced the team class in the utv rally raid at Durhamtown plantation....They put us in the outlaw class because they didn't know where else to put us....We could run 3 laps before being bone dry of fuel, where others could go twice as far,(they do like fuel)....I ran 3 laps, and came in to let my partner turn his 3 laps...On his 3rd lap,he hit a tree, probably running 50,and twisted his pilot up terribly....He limped it back to the pits, but it took him 6 extra minutes to get back above our normal lap times....I ended up running the last 6 laps by myself...We finished 2nd,and was beat by an xp900 by 2 minutes...Do the math....If he had not hit the tree,we would have been 1st,and beat the second place team by 4 minutes...I do remember getting behind 1 highly modified xp900 during the race that was really fast...When he saw me behind him,he hammered it...I couldn't get around him,but he couldn't get rid of me either...I wasn't pushing mine that hard because of dusty conditions, but he was on the edge of wrecking trying to keep me from passing...If he had let me by,I am sure I would have left him too....
We never ran another race because parts are too hard to come by if you tear something up...My buddy ended up buying another pilot just to get the stuff he needed to fix his....We were just curious how we would do against the others, and we found out!!!!
I also own an 08 rzr...The build quality and the fit and finish of the pilot surpasses the rzr by leaps and bounds....No comparison....Not even close....I have owned pilots for close to 10 years, and other than a very few engine issues,I have NEVER had a problem with cracked frames, broken axles, blown trannys, ball joints, etc.,and we beat the crap out of them...
I am saying all of this to show just how awesome they are,and a machine in todays market that has the same quality and attention to detail would easily cost $15000....There were no corners cut,and was for the most part over engineered...From the anti dive built into the suspension to the less than 1/2 turn lock to lock of the wheel,to all the controls beeing on the steering yoke....They wouldn't have to change a thing to be on top of the market again...

Re: Bring back the Honda Pilot...(not the minivan)

They are a blast....the "formula one" of the ATV world! I'm keeping the one I have stock, since it's so clean and original, but am looking for another to swap in a Rotax and some custom suspension work. Honda will never bring them back....too costly to build and too much liability for such a limited market

Re: Bring back the Honda Pilot...(not the minivan)

Randy--you drove my Ridge Runner (I think...), what did you think of it as being nearly what everyone says they want in a UTV? 52HP held it back. That suspension was MADE for an 80HP powerplant

Another example of a good product killed by a too-high price. I regret selling it. We just don't get much use out of our 2nd Rzr.

I wish they would reintroduce them just the way they stopped making them back in 1990 but no way it will happen with a 2 stroke engine

Have had my Pilot since 1995 great machine.

A sealed CVT would be the way I would go the open CVT = short belt and clutch life

Re: Bring back the Honda Pilot...(not the minivan)

Had a blast in the pilots. I dont miss the lower back shots from the small amount of wheel travel in the back.

Brought 10 total with us back in 2000. Would always break 2-3 every trip. One was a 500 was long travel where they cut the fenders and mounted the shocks high up on the cage.

I thought one of the main reasons they stopped selling them was due to people breaking their backs?

What were you breaking on them?

They stopped selling them due to sales, talked to Pete Terhorst of American Honda many years ago he told me Honda sold about 4500 89-90 Pilots in the USA back when they were on the show room floor you could buy a Pilot or buy two new 89 TRX250R's for the same price then when you seen them next to a Pilot would ask yourself where your going to ride it and store it, ton of fun just not for everybody, look at the Redline Revolt great car not a big seller..

To put it in perspective when Honda came out with the 400EX they sold more than 4500 of them the first week they were released, they sold about 4500 Pilots over about a 4 year period.

Pilots are great machines I still have two of them and just bought a 3rd one thats wrecked and a basket case.

I installed a 440 snowmobile engine in my main ride its a 90 hp engine but I detuned it to about a honest 70 hp fun factor is really high it weighs about 400 lbs less than my RZR-S and has 2x the power

Have seen a few people break their backs in a Pilot over the years usually caused by them tensing up their whole body when they come off a hard jump relax let the suspension do its thing enjoy the ride, nice thing about the Pilot is you can flip and roll them put them on the wheels and go again not like a RZR when you roll it have to spend thousands of dollars getting a new frame or cage, have flipped and rolled mine so many times I have lost count

Yup me too!!!!

They need to bring out a side by side 1 or 2 seater with the Honda PowerJet turbo engine or one of the V-twin cruiser engines, CVT or paddleshifter, selectable 4wd, maybe even a locker, Powersteering, 18" travel 15" GC, low center of gravity, 9gal tank.

Anyone know what tubing was used on those Honda's? Wall thickness? Mild steel or DOM ? 1.5" tubing ? Thanks
