Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
There is a discussion going on in another thread about places to ride in the Las Vegas Area. You can see it Here. The Southern Nevada BLM Office Website states where you can and can not ride. You can get that Here. I have uploaded a Google Earth Map of the Mt Charleston Area so you can see the trail you can ride. I have not put in all the legal roads and trails yet, but will have it soon. Here is the image and if you want the file for Google Earth email be and I will send it to you bolter303@me.com
I have also put here the map from the BLM Office that I got showing the roads you can ride on. Next is the Boulder City Conservation Easement Interim Road Designations Map. This shows what roads and trails you can ride in the area of El Dorado Dry Lake Bed near Nelson Nevada. As you can see form all the red roads they have closed a lot and will close more soon. On the left of the Highway north of 165 the power-line roads have a 25 mph speed limit. The "Patrol" guy sits on a hill overlooking this area waiting to had out tickets, so be careful. You can ride in the Nelson area. There are a lot of trails there. I have been there 3 times and not come close to seeing them all. Just stay clear of the Lake Mead Nations Recreation Area. That is off limits to ATV's and UTV's. I have posted a picture of the LMNRA to give you a reference. Google Earth Mt Charleston Area ![]() BLM Map ![]() Boulder City Conservation Area Map ![]() El Dorado Wilderness Area Map ![]() Lake Mead National Recreation Area Map ![]() I hope this helps.

Re: Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
Hey Will,
Well lets see if I can help you out. The first map is one that I made on Google Earth. I used the BLM map and US Forest Service Map to traced along the road using the maps as a guideline. The sections of the road that are Blue are in the BLM controlled area. This area is Red Rock Conservation Area. Where the road crosses in to the US Forest Service Area (USFS), I changed the line to green. This follows the same colors on the BLM map. If you look at the BLM Map and see the Blue Road that is north from Highway 157 (Kyle Cyn Rd) is called Lucky Strike Rd. This is the trail that we took on that Saturday a few weeks ago. The road stays blue past the power line road up to the top of the hill where we took the pictures of all the RZR's lined up. When we ran up the power line road and climbed that steep hill we were in the USFS area. We passed a sign when we left the BLM area and entered the USFS area. We can ride that power line road all the way back to Highway 95. What we can not do NOW is hit any of the trails that came off of Lucky Strike Rd. They are now closed by BLM. If we go out there again soon we will start to see the signs that they are going to post. You will see in the middle of the map the Red Rock Loop Road. From the back NW corner of that road there is a Jeep trail called "Rocky Gap Road". This road is legal in BLM Area and will take you over the hump to Pahrump. Just before you get there you will hit US Forest Service Rd. #45549. This will take you down into Lovell Canyon Road #45677. There are a lot of US Forest Service Rds on the Pahrump side. The third map is for the Boulder City Conservation Area. This is a new dedicated area and has some closed trails and roads. On the east side of Highway 95 you can see all the green roads in the boxed out section. These are open to ride on but be carefull they are 25 mph on the power line roads. All the red trails and roads are closed to traffic. You can ride from Nelson highway 165 north along the power line and than take the road to the west and hit the dry lake bed. There is a crossing there to get over the highway. You have to drive across one at a time. You can than drive on the lake bed all you want. It is out of the "BCCA". However, if you want to go south past the solar power plant you have to be careful of what roads are open and what are closed. On the west side of the highway on the map the solar plant is the black boxes. There is one green road that goes right through it. This road will take you through "Bottle Neck Pass" and drop you in to the Jean Dry Lake Bed Area. From there you can go south in to "Roach Dry Lake Bed". You can than drive up to the Casino and go in and have a beer than head back across. The next map is for El Dorado Wilderness Area. This area is east or to the right of the Boulder City Conservation Area. They touch each other. If you look at the Green road on the BCCA map east of the highway and follow it east you will see it hits the black border. Than if you look at El Dorado Map you can pick it up from there. You have to remember that All wilderness areas are off limits to motor vehicles and even mountain bikes. Hiking and backpacking only. The big Red line that runs along the west side of the El Dorado Area is Lake Mead National Recreation Area LMNRA) border and is under the National Parks Service (NPS) You can drive a registered vehicle into this area but no ATV's or UTV's allowed. I will post a trail I rode through this area that is legal. Most of the trails south of highway 165 are ok to ride. This is know as Nelson Off Road Area. Here is a link to it. Nelson That is all there is too it. This is why I am trying to use Google Earth and place all roads and trails that you can ride on that. Than you can download the KMZ file and see it on GE. If you and other riders use GPS and track your ride we can put it on GE and use it to help make maps. I can take a GE KMZ file and convert it to a track file for my Lowrance GPS and upload it. I than make it a route to follow it. I can look on GE and see trail heads, intersections, rock formations etc and make way points to upload. I know this was a long post and if you have any questions let me know.

Re: Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
Map 1. is Kyle canyon road. The blue line is BLM in Red rock park. Blue road is $400 tickets.
Map 2. is Red rock park. The blue road is BLM and NO ohv ride. The green is NFS road is in MT. C. NFS do have nice map. Map 3. is Boulder city turtle area. It the land Boulder city want to sell. It is 25 mph and ride only on the road. You fellow the road to the end to turn around. The other turtle area is the road go to Jean to Goodspring. South of the road is 25 mph too. Look at the map and say no ride in light gray box. You can ride in dark gray area. But no riding in Lake Mead. Drive on 95 to Nelson road east for 5 mile or less. There is a offroad area. It will be on the right side. You drive back to the staging area 1 mile. If you ride south of the staging area where a single dirt road meet from 95 there is rock writing. Map 4 and 5. There no riding in there. It is in Lake Mead park. Any thing outside of the dark gray box, but now there is other map came in to play you will see. I think Green Valley airport south to Jean lake is close. But not Jean ohv area. Last edited by Mr. T; June 4th, 2009 at 11:52 AM. |

Re: Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
Mr T,
On Map 1 the Blue roads are ok to use. Any trail that comes off the blue road that is not green is off limits and will result in a $400 fine. The map does not show the side trails but they are there. I have maps for the US Forest Service. I think I saw that you have a link to them on another post on this forum. I spoke to the ranger for the Boulder City Map. He told me that the roads for the power line are the only roads that are 25 mph the other green roads that are not following along the power lines do not have the 25 mph speed limit. I think I also seen it online and will look for it.

Re: Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
How I look at map 2 is the brown outline of the Red rock park. The brown dot line that from Kyle to Goodspring. I was told by a freind there is no riding in Red rock only plated auto can drive on the road. I ride by Goodspring to Blue Diamond hwy. By looking at the park boundary I can't ride anymore.

Re: Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
Your friend was right. You can not ride in red rock canyon area. However, you can trailer your ATV into the red rock canyon park. Go to the far NW corner of the 12 mile loop road and there is a place back there to unload and you can drive on Rocky Gap Rod to Pahrump. I will call them today and verify this. I was told by th BLM office that I can do this. As far as Blue Diamond goes. BLM stated that Sloan Rd is the cut off for the south west part of the valley. Sloan is south of blue diamond rd. So anything between Sloan and blue diamond to the north is off limits.

Re: Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
Well Here we go again! I decided to call the Visitor Center for Red Rock Cyn to find out about the Rocky Gap Rd. I spoke to a Ranger and he told me that the road is open to licensed vehicles only, no ATV's or UTV's. I explained to him that the guy at BLM told me different. So I call over to Mr. Kirk at the BLM office in Las Vegas. He told me that the ranger was not correct and that in fact the Rocky Gap Rd and all the Blue marked roads in the Red Rock Conservation Area are in fact open to OHV's. I told him about my conversation with the ranger and he told me that he will be in contact with him to make sure that they are aware of the rules.
Mr. Kirk and I spoke about the future of the roads in the RRCA. Nevada has sent to the Governor a bill requiring all OHV's to have a registration sticker like California and Utah. According to the BLM the Governor will have a 11 member panel that will decided where and how the money is placed back into the trail system. The BLM has no plans to close off the Designated Roads at this time to licensed vehicles only. In fact they would like to set up a system of trails and roads like Utah but on a smaller scale. Lee asked if the Las Vegas RZR Riders would be interested in sponsoring an adopt a trail program. We will be asked to ride the trail at least once a month and clean up and trash and debris as well as place the carsonite markers to mark the legal trails. I told him that I will check with the group. So in a nut shell as of right now all Blue roads on the Red Rock Conservation Area map are OK to ride ATV's and UTV's. If anyone hears different please get the name of the ranger or person you talk to so that we can keep it all straight.

Re: Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
Thanks for do this.
Blm map sucks. I think the best way is buy the topo map book for state of Navada and don't cross cut the roads. If ask say went to the net for info and saw nothing. Plus say, show me in topo map book that say I can't ride. Then say why didn't you update the "gov" topo map book before I got it. Then say will you please mark the book to tell me where I can ride. Then get the hell out of there. lol The map book is the size of the states map book. Buy one and slip it behind the seat. Sport good store will have them or online. Some topo map are old and need to be updated any why. Here is a link to look at for Topo map. Topo has many measure scales that is use. So click on the area one you want. Then hit is again and again. You will go maybe 4 to 5 map to get the smallest scale. TOPO! Explorer — Explore Last edited by Mr. T; June 4th, 2009 at 05:31 PM. |

Re: Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
I wish that would work. Just so you understand, it is the rider's responsibility to know where he or she is riding. It is their responsibility to know if the road or trail that they are on is legal or not. I know of people that have received a ticket and claimed they not know of that there was no sign. You would have a hard time in court to fight it. It is just like you are responsible to know what the speed limit is on the road you are driving. You can't say I did not see a sign. I have a TOPO program for my computer. I print out a copy of the BLM map, NFS map and topo map and carry them with me. I also can upload a image of the topo map on my GPS unit.

Re: Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
Yes it up to me to know the area to ride. This why I am bug you for info. lol
I will spend hours look for info before I go. But now to day age BLM is far behind everyone else. I want the info just like you. That map need to be better and on the net. I can take the fight just by looking at the map. How do you know even by the map where the close area is at. There is no black stright out line on the map to tell not to ride in the park. All you see is brown line and four dash and then brown line around the park. On the bottom left you see the syblom for no ohv ride. Now where is it. I want to see bench marks or gps reads not like someone draw box saying that is it. I want on paper. I am not starting to be the pain but reading gun being pulled ,Photo taken and ticket in area that by map is not close to me. They need to take a look at this. You may ask them for rough gps reading on where they don't want us to ride. Saw Big Bear green sticker free to non green free. I watch the closing of the Glamis north side and the battle over the years on the south. Then went to a place call Doumut when it was questable to be there. Pulled tabs and broken glass in river to broken glass in sand. I even seen a person take a hot BQ dump it in to a bush started a fire in NFS. I been on both side of the street (ohv to tree hunger) and I was schooled to pick up mine trush. The whole thing I found out is respect the land. Like I say this to a friend. Untill the 7-11 start selling drugs and there is 10k tv station there will be land to ride Seen it all but don't know it all. lol . Last edited by Mr. T; June 4th, 2009 at 07:44 PM. |

Re: Maps of Places to Ride in Las Vegas Area
You can always bug me, I have been learning a lot from this. BLM is behind the times. They do not have a lot on online. The do however have a BLM OHV Closure Map. I posted it here and the link to it is BLM Map.
On the right at the Legend it has closures except designated roads. Also at the area in green it states motor vehicles on designated roads. From my meeting with BLM you can ride in the Red Rock Conservation area on designated roads. If you follow the black dotted line around the valley you will see mile markers that will tell you when you left the closure area. You can see that SR-160 aka Blue Diamond Rd. is in the closed area. Once you past the RRCA you hit Forest Service area and the roads there are legal according to their map. [quote]How do you know even by the map where the close area is at. There is no black stright out line on the map to tell not to ride in the park. All you see is brown line and four dash and then brown line around the park. On the bottom left you see the syblom for no ohv ride/QUOTE] Look at the RRCA Map at the top you will see Highway 95. To the right of that just below the pink color (Department of Defense) you will see a blue dotted line. This line is showing this area to be closed to OHV according to the legend. Now look at the map below. Look at highway 95 on the top left of the map. See green mile marker 105? That is the same spot on RRCA map and you can follow the same dotted line down and around. If you can print or open both maps and place them side by side and follow along it will help. There is no black line saying you can't rider here. I am working with the BLM to get the Quad Maps that the use to set the borders. You see how the border is like boxes. These are quad boundaries. Once I get them I can put them into google earth and do a color overlay of the areas. This will help a lot of people. Send me a private email to this address: bolter303@me.com I am going to have a meeting Thursday June 18th at 7pm at the Draft House on Rancho Drive. This is the first meeting of the Las Vegas RZR Club. I am going to bring all my maps with me and I can explain it all to you there. I am looking forward to meeting you.
